You know, at first I thought this was a pretty terrible idea but now I'm starting to come around to it.
It's a way to get people to leave all of their pre-conceived notions and super high expectations of things at the door.
It's set up so that you get as "real" an experience as possible at a party.
I can see this opening a lot of people's eyes to things that they might not have previously been interested in.
and ps. It's effing Stereo...you know whatever/whoever they bring in is so going to be top notch....quality is kind of their.....forte.

Also, I think if someone wants to go to Stereo, they just have to take the focus off of seeing a particular DJ they want to see, and banking their enjoyment of the night on the set the DJ plays.
Planning a trip to Stereo will have to be more of a, "I want to get out of the city and have a fun weekend with friends in Montreal" kind of trip than "I want to see DJ xyz". These kinds of trips are fun too. Lots of people go for a party weekend in Montreal without caring about the DJ that's playing. And when you really think about it, in past party weekends in Montreal that we've all had, how much of the good memories that we retain are because of a set that a DJ played?

Also, this concept only applies to Saturdays. So if you really want to know at least some of the DJs playing there, wait until a long weekend. For example, on Thanksgiving weekend, it's already been announced that Howells is playing on Sunday, and Victor Calderone on Monday.

I don't mind the idea - and if I'm in Montreal and happen to have a free-night/sunday morning, I'll probably end up at Stereo, but it's unlikely I'll make a point to travel to Stereo /just/ for stereo not knowing what the lineup is.
Like, if I'm there for Mutek, and the Nocturn closes down at 3am and I'm looking for elsewhere to go - I'm find heading over to Stereo because I'm pretty sure it'll be a solid-bet for quality music (and a nice change of pace from the minimal/techno of Mutek) --- not knowing the lineup doesnt detour me in that situation.

pffft. :p
Digweed would be a magical mind melting journey in that club.
i was actually mentioning that the opening weekend how I would want to be there when he stepped up on those decks. I would die.
Yes friend. Not everyone's cup of tea as a dj I understand.

I feel the same way. Yes it kinda does suck you don't really "know" whos playing until the day of or day before if it leaks out, but the mysteriousness behind whos playing will enhance the hype of the party and you know you're gonna get the best ing house/tribal house this country has to offer on that specific saturday night.
I'm still up for picking a random weekend in MTL and making the trek up to Stereo, cuz imagine we walk in and to our surprise it's calderone/vibe/fauvrelle/d-formation/behrouz etc, then even better :eyes: :toothless :toothless

love the idea. kudos to stereo! the club itself is enough reason to travel to montreal and party.. who the cares who's playing

As long as Barbara Tucker isn't a 1 hour guest performer then all's good.

i dunno. quite a bit actually.
so you are telling me that you wouldn't mind if you went to montreal one weekend, went to stereo and it was like Nevio playing. and then you found out that the next weekend richie hawtin (or whichever dj you are into these days) played you wouldn't be turned off? i would be furious.

which is probably why I wouldn't make a trip to Montreal /just/ for Stereo right now.
But, nothing is saying that Stereo won't drop this concept if it starts to backfire. Right now, seems to be working in their favor - but if people stop coming, to many people complaining, etc - I think they'd rather drop the concept then loose money.
I doubt stereo would be booking Hawtin - part of the reason that these nights can work, is you're going to have a safe bet on the style that's going to be played. I don't really see minimal/techno fitting in their their Sat night concepts.

i only said the dj name towards graham since that's a dj he likes. not that i think hawtin will play stereo.

I get the impression truly big/rare DJs (ie ones on my list of MUST TRAVEL TO MTL TO SEE) would not be booked in secret on a Saturday. IE there is no way Richie Hawtin or Sven Vath will be a mystery guest, if for nothing more than economic reasons.
So in short, I don't mind this idea, as I don't think I'll miss anything that isn't going to happen again, either in Mtl or Toronto. (IE Martinez Bros last weekend)
