The inside is completely changed. About the only thing that is the same is the stairs into the main room.
When you get to the top of the stairs, you are at the back of a giant speaker stack that walls off a good portion of the dance floor.
The seating area is accessed via stairs to the left and right of when you first get into the dance area. It's about 5 or 6 steps up - not too high, but enough to separate it from the main area. The front of the seating area is lined with glass so it has an open feeling - and feels very much like it's still in the party and not off to the side.
The seating area is tired a little bit - I think about 3 levels of seating.
The dance floor is more like a bit rectangle - some risers are at the one end, big screens on opposite walls.
The wall across from the stairs is also just a bunch of speakers IIRC, and the DJ booth is fairly high up - there is no way to be at eye level with the DJ. The floor of the DJ booth seemed like it was maybe 8 feet or so above the dance floor?

for a rough ascii representation - the glass wall of the DJ booth is flush with the wall of the dancefloor and fairly far above it. My friend complained 'I don't know where I'm supposed to look!' (took awhile to see where it was). Personally, I like that - everyone was focused on the music / dancing / getting down with their friends - not trainspotting the DJ.
When you first get into the club after frisking - there is minimal seating, the washrooms are to the far end - kinda open, you see the stall doors, separating that area from the bathroom is a low long rectangular sink.
Along the back wall was a bunch of machines with water inside. Seemed like this area got a bit of fire damage and wasn't quite the final product yet.
Very very different from the old Stereo. |
ahhh. yeah, totally different.
graham, you used to walk up those stairs and you were right under the DJ. to see the DJ at all you had to go to the other side of the club and turn around. there was a large podium in the middle where a lot of people chilled around and danced on.
the seating areas seem like that are in the same place just more pimped out.
where was the smoking area? or is there a smoking area? |

Hrmm, I never spent much time in the seating areas at old Stereo, but if I recall correctly, were they not more in the corner of the club and on a bit of a diagonal? now they run along the entire wall of the club.

the ,,,, being the stairs up to the seating areas and the ^^^^ being the stairs into the main dance room.
The smoking area is on the fire escape at the back of the club |

I was in the U.S. during the re-opening weekend but Graham's review made me want to check this place out, now, more than ever...
Since I had never been to Stereo, I didn't have anything to compare it to besides all the amazing reviews looming around from parties of previous years. I found out on Saturday afternoon that Martinez Bros. were going to be there, and, since I missed them at Cobra a few months ago, the news came as a pleasant surprise.
We arrived at the club at 3am and walked right in. The entrance looked pretty grimy but if I hadn't known there had been a fire recently, I never would've guessed. The first thing I noticed as I walked upstairs was the sea of topless men on the dancefloor. Normally, the crowd at a club is something I dont pay too much attention to, however in this case it was unavoidable. Despite having been warned of the demographics, we were still bewildered by the ratio of guys to girls, which was close to something like 50:1. After quickly getting over the abundance of testosterone in the room, we turned our attention to the music. We caught the end of Jo Jo Flores and were blown away by the pumping animalistic sound the Martinez Bros. were dishing out. To add to the vibe in the room, there were half a dozen male dancers dressed like cast members of the cats musical...random but cool. Overall the ambiance of the club was amazing. I was loving the fact that everyone was dancing and the emphasis was on the music and not the lights/lasers/visual effects. We spent a large portion of the night on the dance floor but later moved to the back which was elevated and gave us a better view of the club and dj booth which seemed even higher up than I anticipated. Overall, this club met my expectations and it's a place I'm sure I'll revisit soon. |

I like this idea. No need for DJ worshippers, just bring out the party people. |

Too bad I started a new day job, so I won't take time off to party. If you could go (it's Monday October 12th), go! The party is the .
jojoflores and Martinez Brothers would be a party I would attend if I knew about it in advance. :( |

I'm going to be there but it will have to be a last minute decision. I don't think my old body will hold up to Stereo Saturday, B&B and Howells Sunday and then that party... |
