I'm watching it live on CP24 so no source yet as they are still broadcasting. Too many scandals ala underreporting the sick payout and needless strikes finally caught up to this douchebag. Lets hope Toronto gets a good mayor, no more Millers or Barbara Hall's.
Good times!!! |

Ok it is done now. So he said he is not running again so he can spend more time with his family as when he first entered politics in 1994 he didnt have any kids and now he does and they are growing up.
I guess the fact that his popularity plumitting this summer to 32% BEFORE this recent scandal had NOTHING to do with his decision. haha. Now if Adam Vaughn would follow suit.
This was taken from City News.
David Miller has made his decision: he won't pursue another term as mayor of Toronto.
He made the announcement at a press conference on Friday.
Miller said he was proud of his record and what he contributed to the city, but wanted to spend more time with his family.
He said his two children were born after his first election as councillor in 1994, and should he win again, his daughter would be in university before he left office.
With tears in his eyes, Miller said every major platform he ran on had been accomplished, or was well underway. The room burst into applause.
When the clapping ended, he joked that he appreciated having his campaign team there for the announcement.
Miller has always said he planned to serve for three sessions, but in recent months, his popularity has taken a nose dive.
Both this summer’s strike by civic workers (39 days without garbage pick-up or daycare) and a discrepancy in just how much the city owes in sick bank liability have effected his support.
During the job action, Miller said the amount was about $250 million.
It was later revealed to be closer to $450 million, a discrepancy revealed by an outside auditor.
On Thursday, the mayor defended the $200 million shortfall.
“As you know, the figure that was used during the strike was [one number]. That is the figure for the CUPE pension liability,” Miller said.
“Sick bank liabilities relating to police and fire fighters were not relevant to the strike and were not used at the time.”
City councillors have requested that an independent auditor find out why the information was never shared.
An Ipsos-Reid poll conducted shortly after the strike ended showed that Miller's popularity plummeted to an all-time low of just 29 percent. Twenty-five percent still declared him a great leader, while a more monumental 79% agreed it's time for a new mayor.
Former provincial Conservative leader John Tory and deputy premier George Smitherman are both said to be considering bids for the city’s top job. Tory ran for mayor back in 2003, but lost to Miller.
The next election will be held in November 2010. |

awesome, I love the "retiring to spend more time with my family" euphemism that is so common in the corporate world after big screwups.
he's paid the price for mishandling quite a few things, good to know that he's not going to drag the city any further into the mud.
who's next?! |

Yeah except the city is leaderless for the next 13 months. What good is a politician without the threat of not being re-elcted? I am happy that the city is losing a bad leader but a year is a long time, which kinda has me a bit worried about can happen within that time.
As for who's next Adam Giambronie is already on record as a "maybe".
John Tory and Deputy Premier Smitherman are all rumoured. |

He says he's accomplished everything he wanted to accomplish as mayor...
If he ran again it would be for himself and not the city...
Tell me, if he accomplished everything he wanted to, then shouldn't the city be in better shape then when he'd started??? |

I think most people would agree with that statement. I think the first thing the next mayor should do id get rid of all the miller taxes to encourage growth in the city.
the next budget in the spring should be interesting as there are all kinds of monetary shortcomings coming to horizon, and the mayor has no worries about public opinion.
Can't beleive city spending has gone up 35% since he started as mayor. no wonder the city is in the shape it is in. |

Yeah, also the fact that he is not seeking re-election but has 15 months left can be dangerous... he will not have to consider future PR consequences if he's planning on anything else that is controversial.

Yeah it's interesting that he considers himself to have accomplished everything he wanted... because many of us would say he hasn't accomplished a whole lot of anything - maybe a good sign of how out of touch he has been with the people he's supposed to be representing? |
