A lot of people are so eager to forget that it was the Chretien Liberals that brought us out of the deficit years of the late eighties to early nineties. They halted spending on a lot of programs and cut taxes and actually started paying down the debt. Previous and following conservative governments can't make these claims whether under a majority or not. Scandal brought that government down, not good policies. |
Chretien was a pimp. The best Prime Minister of our era.
that douche Harper. |

Chretien was awesome...
Grand Mere Shawinigate scandal, HRDC billion dollar scandal, Gun registry scandal, Sponsorship scandal.
A pure and genuine example of fiscal responsibility and wholesomeness. |

But it's treated as a tax. The city doesnt even hide the fact that the primary objective of parking fines is revenue and NOT safety or traffic flow. If thats not a tax, then what is?
|
Can you show where this is significantly different from how other large cities handle their fines? That is to say... do other large cities not collect fines and consider it revenue? Do they send the money collected from the fines to some charity? |

Gun Registry SCANDAL? LMFAO. Way to sensationalize. Not everything involving the auditor general is a scandal.
And yeah, he strangled a guy? So what? it was bad-ass.
I hear Mulroney's time as PM was pretty scandal-free. Just sayin... |

And don't forget....
BALANCED THE BUDGET....PAID DOWN DEBT...GOT MULRONEY ERA "run away" SPENDING UNDER CONTROL.(another example of Conservatives talking a great game and spending like drunken sailors when in office..and JayX...he got two solid majorites....so what's your excuse for this one?) |

Well i can tell you this. Not many places ive been to are as tight assed about parking as toronto. For example, when i go to montreal people think im nuts for insisting on being at my car the second the time runs out. "Oh you are probably good for at least a half hour". They obviously have never experienced the parking nazis!
Do you see 5 meter maids in a 10 block radius anywhere else you go? Even in New York City i was hard pressed to find even 1!
Im not saying that other cities dont operate similarly. But Toronto does it with such unprecedented zeal that it makes your head spin. And its definately gotten worse in the last 10 years. Its having one intended effect. A lot of people i know refuse to go downtown thanks to this policy.
BTW should we even get into the discussion about how many pay machines have sprouted up lately, even on streets that are literally in the middle of nowhere? Not to mention the street parking permit (tax) that exists on virtually every side street that barely existed 10 years ago. |

Actually 3. And you know why? Because there was something called the right wing split. The PCs and The Alliance along with the Bloc split the vote and allowed Chretien to waltz up the middle every single time.
Ask the provinces how the liberals balanced the budget. It was by cutting transfer payments and raising federal taxes to record highs. In fact one of the reasons why Harris had to be such a hated cost cutter (and thus transferring a lot onto municipalities) is because of paul martin's "balanced budget". That, and cleaning up the mess that Boob Rae and his NDP spendaholics left us. In the mean time federal taxes went up, spending went up, scandals ballooned and we were left with a bloated largesse government. |

Nothing near to the billions and billions thrown out the window with the Fiberals..
If you dont consider the gun registry to be a scandal (originally supposed to only cost 2 million dollars and ends up costing 1.5 BILLION dollars) then what do you call it? |

Like I said before and you chose to ignore, taxes and spending went down. Doesn't sound like typical Socialist largess government that you consistently accuse the Liberals of. To use your own argument against you about Harris dealing with NDP problems. Well, much of the same could be said of Chretien having to inherit the many problems left behind by the Mulrooney era. |
