He took over a mess from Lastman and did get a lot done....but sooner or later people in this city are going to have to start to pay up if they want a world class city with a heart...

Taxes in TO are much less than all the cities in the 905.....and it can't continue...

Thank you Mayor Miller for a dose of reality during your term...and good luck!

AMAZING!!!

But what a coward for not facing the electorate. Either way im happy. He is the worst mayor i can remember. Lets hope we swing to the right in the next election. No more socialists please! Its proven that they cannot run a piggy bank let alone a huge city.

Newflash, we are already paying up and getting squat for it. The problem is not how much we are paying, its how much we are spending. The next mayor has to cut the waste, lower union wages and reign in spending on frills.

If i were mayor:

-Id fill in the west channel at the airport and dig a new wider one between the airport and the island making navigation safer for boats and ending the bridge to the airport fiasco

-Id fire at least half of the meter maids and simplify parking restrictions

-Id rescind silly bylaws like not allowing music in parks etc. Instead, lIke central park there would be designated quiet areas and activity areas. Also, why should you need a permit to get a wedding picture taken?

- Id cut spending and grants on things like arts programs. These are great things to have but not when the city is broke and cant even fill in potholes.

- Next round of contract talks would see wages equal to the private sector, or if not possible, contracts out to the private sector.

-Id automate the TTC like in New York and eliminate the need for $100,000 per year fare collectors

- Streetcars would be phased out in favour of bus service and eventually subways

- I would make LRT in the suburbs happen but it would be real LRT trains instead of slow cumbersome streetcars. What a half assed idea as it is now!!

- Id allow the private sector to help in massively improving the subway and rapid transit infrastructure with measures such as advertising, private/public line development and fare structures etc

-bike lanes would be separate and use right of ways such as rosedale valley, the lakeshore, allies, parks and side streets. Major roads should not have capacity diminished for the sake of a bike every 5 minutes.

- No more condos would be allowed at the expense of other buildings until all empty spaces downtown are filled. Why should we tear down perfectly good buildings for a condo when there is an empty parking lot right next to it?

I agree with every single one of your ideas. I would also add that an initiative should be tabled to amalgimate all the transit systems in the GTA from Oakville to Ajax from Toronto to Newmarket. Having 7 transit systems in such a small geographic area is inefficent.

It would also allow lobbying different levels of government for funding a much more pressing issue as it would pressure the governments to serve a larger portion of their voters.

-good idea on the airport.
-meter maids and easing parking regulations? you will have a lot of revenue to catch up on. those maids make the city money (not that i like it)
-parks by laws aren't going to help our budget concerns
-grants to arts help define our city, draw tourism, and private sector spending cut these out completely and so does a lot of our city's personality
-the private sector may be a good solution for some of the city services Garbage maybe?
-The 100k fare collector is not a major problem compared to some of the others the city is facing
-new subways=BIG money where will you find it?
-scarborough is not a suburb but that LRT idea seems useless

Check your facts...Torontonians pay less property tax than 905ers....

AND is was not so mush that Miller raised taxes as it was that Lastman did not...he left the city in a huge mess with years of 0% tax increases....it was not realistic and Miller had to correct it!

source?

and if you do source it. please include the expected windfall of money the new land transfer tax and vehicle (please ride a bike) registration tax. I'm sure if you include these two new bad boys you will see a massive spike in tax revenue.

Street cars are good if they're on dedicated lanes like in my home city, but here in T.O street car lanes are sharing the road with cars which is just a traffic nightmare, especially in the downtown core. I'd prefer seeing buses phased out and have a combination of dedicated lanes for street cars and an LRT system.

In realistically you wouldn't get any of that done. You know that once you'd go into office you'd have to cater to the people that put you there. The issue with this city is that the problems don't begin or end with the mayor. He's just another cog.
