Dental work, aka braces etc. (pg. 3)

Had them for about 6 months, they hurt but it's not that bad really, what kado mentioned about the wire sticking the back of your cheeks is the absolute WORST part. I had to keep putting big globs of wax on them to keep them from tearing my cheeks apart. I still have a ton of scarring back there from that.
They cost I think about $2,000, but my parents dental plan covered them at that time. Sadly, they were all for naught in my case. I've got an extremely bad open bite that requires four separate surgeries to fix, each costing nearly $10,000 and requiring about 2 weeks of recovery time (apparently the recovery time is pretty important as one of the surgeries requires the breaking of my jaw).
We got this estimate after visiting about 5 different orthodontists and getting a different answer / solution each time. I really hate orthodontia / dental work at this point, I can't help but think each practitioner we visit is just out for their own agenda... whether that's true or not I don't know. Since my dad started his own business we currently don't have any dental insurance, so we can't even afford to fix my problem right now, which sucks as the longer I go without getting this done, the more chance I have of my molars getting worn down to the nerve endings as I can't really do any chewing with my forward teeth.
/oops, rant |

Not that we'll ever hear about it, but I look forward to the day that your wisdom teeth go septic. I didn't believe my dentist either. |

For the most part, I have relatively good teeth. I've never had a cavity, and they are nice and naturally white :)
However, all of my wisdom teeth have been very impacted, and the one on the bottom right was growing into my jaw bone. Last November I had the 2 bottom wisdom teeth removed but ended up getting dry sockets. Dry sockets = most agonizing pain EVAR. I seriously just wanted to die at one point.
Anyway, I am getting the top ones taken out this December and luckily they aren't as complicated to remove as the bottoms were. My only real issue now is my ridiculous overbite.
My mom asked me when I was 8 or 9 if I wanted to get braces and sure enough, I said no. If only I had known that it was going to be necessary :(
My overbite is causing my top teeth to push the gum lines of the bottom teeth down. So... I have no other option but to get braces to correct the issue now. It sucks because I am so poor with so much school debt, but I can't wait until I graduate because I intend to travel and don't want to end up with the problem Slylee had.
*sigh*
So, after my top wisdom teeth are removed, I go to see an orthodontist to determine what they need to do. They have already told me that I will likely have to get out another set of molars because my mouth is too little (despite popular belief that I have a big mouth ;))
So lame. Maybe I should sell my virginity on e-bay to support my ridiculous dental costs. LOL! |

Wore braces for around 9 months...never used to open my mouth when smiling before, now I don't have a problem. Went and got myself a fancy suit after I got them off. This is a photo of around that time:

like teeth on top of teeth, etc.. |
this. i had braces for a long time. i had ED UP teeth. ended up having a bunch of extra teeth that they had to pull, and from how i understand, an extra molar that grew in after both the baby and adult molar fell out.
getting them tightened was ing painful, but i think it's only because my teeth were so in crooked. i usually couldn't eat anything solid for a couple days at a time until i got used to them. i believe they cost a couple thousand dollars.
after i got them taken off, i had a retainer that i at first had to wear all day long (except for when eating), then only at night, then every other day. i stopped wearing them because i got lazy. my teeth have shifted *slightly* (my two front incisors are slightly gapped near the gums and pushing together near the tips in a "V" shape) but they still look straight nowadays.

same thing (kinda) happened to me. one dentist told me they were impacted and wouldn't have to be taken out, or they wouldn't grow in, or they they wouldn't have to be taken out for a long time. i went to a different dentist years later and he said they definitely had to be taken out.
my top two wisdom teeth just recently grew in. haven't had a problem yet. bottom two are still MIA |

oh yeah, forgot about that part. i never used the wax. i have scar tissue on the inside of my upper lip and part of my cheeks because of either a) the wire poking my cheeck or b) the actual brace rubbing against my lip. there's a literal flap of skin on the inside of my upper lip that's been there since getting braces. it's not bad nor was it that painful and it could've been avoided but i was a stubborn kid and hated putting that ing wax in my mouth. |

My dentist wanted me to have them when I was a teenager, but I stupidly declined. I have really terrible teeth. I'm your stereotypical Brit with bad teeth. I never show them off when I smile because they're so ing bad. In a few years when I've got some money I'm going to have to get them fixed. |
luckily there's no age limit for braces :p
invisalign anyone? |
