You can't farm whales or run breeding programs. The reproduction rates of whales is much slower than cows/sheep etc so it takes longer for numbers to come back.
It comes down to sustainability. We can farm cows/sheep/chickens at sustainable rates. Hunting whales may be unsustainable, especially if quota numbers are allowed to increase.
I'm not siding with the environmentalists here, just pointing out its not an exactly equal argument.
by the way, dunno about this year's quota but in recent years the Japanese have hunted Fin whales which were on the endangered list. And Norway have higher quota numbers than the Japanese. |
so the whole point of this is about extinction? there's no moral problems with killing whales as long as it's sustainable?
if this is true then you're right, it's not as hypocritical, but you have to admit that people go ape- over whales being killed, and not because of their sustainability... yet they don't give a about much worse "humanitarian" conditions for the vast majority of the meat industry...
i'm not an activist, and i'm not trying to change anything, but i'm definitely not going to preach about how bad the japanese are killing a couple of NOT ENDANGERED whales when the largest part of our economy is based on exploitation of natural resources, and animal slaughter... which i believe is what most of the people talking about whaling are talking about...

as i said above, japan is not the only state involved in whaling.
secondly, it's not like japan JUST started whaling and are throwing the echosystem out of whack in the last few years...
thirdly, as i posted a number of times, the minke whale is NOT in danger of becoming extinct... and if you claim they kill others looking for minke etc, so do many many fishing ships: tuna = dolphins etc
i think this whole thing is crap just because if this is an environmental problem how about focusing on your own life instead of blaming everything on industry? How about stop buying the products that fuel this kind of industry and maybe they won't be able to sustain their expansion?
or further, how about focusing on aspects of environmental change that are SERIOUSLY ing terrifying, instead of something like whaling...
it's so easy to blame industry, and i'm not supporting industry because i think it's terrible, and pretty much every aspect of industry that has any kind of success pretty much ruins the world in some way or another, but i think scapegoating helps nobody, and international scapegoating is even worse because you probably have no idea what you're talking about. |

Yeah I'm not actually changing the argument or anything.
The thing is that there are three main reasons ( in my mind. If you are religious you could add a fourth) against all animal killing. I don't see whales as any more important than cats, cows, chickens, fish, dolphins, whatever.
Environmental problems, Animal Right problems, and Health problems.
I want to punch people crying about dogs being eaten in China or Dolphins being caught instead of tuna. You shouldn't give a sit about dogs and cats and not cows and pigs.
I personally see the whaling industry as horrible, cruel, and inhumane... but then so are all of the meat industries.
The Sea Shepherd people could easily do something that would actually help with their time and money, but all they really care about is being on TV and being famous. They aren't useless, they're Negative. They're putting animal activists into a bad light and they're wasting resources on their 'fight' and fuel on their boat. |

endangered?
last time i checked most dolphins were listed as least concern via conservation status
let me put it this way.
We could try and kill every mammal on this earth and after we are gone life would still persists.
We could nuke the whole planet 3 times over and life would still persist.
Unless your a vegan your simply a hypocrite playing god and saying which animals deserve or dont deserve to die. |

fair enough i may have taken my point too far and have been a bit conceited in demeaning you. I did understand your point though and for arguments sake it was somewhat valid as lira soon clarified.
