I'm with you man , I miss the days that Lawler , Vibe , and possibly Creator would be included in the event... but times are changing and the reality is many promoters are now jumping on board the trance train.
That's what the kids are listening to now , it's all the older crowd that loves Vibe and Lawler.. but there getting older and not going out as much anymore... so the promoters go after the people that will show up. |

agreed the trance bookings seem to be good but the house bookings are complete I miss the 2008 Resolution line-up even though I missed all the good parts (honestly two years later I am still bitter lol)
Currently I'm planning on skipping this Resolution, unless my friends who are really adamant on going have some serious tricks up their sleeve to get me to go. |

It's really coming down to who is behind the promotions / productions.
Without naming names I suspect that some of the big promotions are playing a numbers game and seeking out talent based on who they "think" will sell the most tickets.
Is it a smart business move.. maybe... but does it change the Montreal scene... I think so.
Instead of a serious crowd filled with all the cool people , you get swarms of kids who dress like crap and have no spending money...... living off of a single bottle of water and whatever chewing gum they can get from people nearby. Attending the event for the only purpose of "being cool" and "geting f*cked up" ... with little or no appreciation for the music and the vibe.
The exact same thing has been observed in Ibiza , and it does hurt...
But there are exceptions to this , such as the Monday night on the Labour day weekend where Victor Calderone was at Stereo... everyone who was there simply lost it! All for the right reasons...
I think Creator is doing the same thing at Circus , and Cesar Romaro at Redlite ... and with Steve Lawler performing at Tribe and Carl Cox at Opera last week.... you still have the best music being heard in Montreal.
You just need to be attending the right events... |

it's not possible to fill out a 7000 people event with "serious crowd"...
proof: Black and Blue, stellar "serious crowd" lineup and attendance was really bad.
Can you really blame the promoter? |

No I can't.... I understand the reasons... it's just a tough pill to swallow... |

Those massive are the "main gates" to our sub-culture... never forget that, so yes it dilutes the crowds with people that doesn't give a about the music, but at the same time bring new people to our music.
It's the same thing for every other sub-culture, be it Rock, Metal, whatever... there's always a good proportion of people that are there for all the bad reasons. |

There are no shortage of good events in this town. Go to those instead.:)
We all went through our "we hate bal en blanc so much now because we are so advanced in our musical taste that the music we like doesn't even exist yet" phase, myself included.:p |

I agree it is a business move to sell tickets and really I don't blame promoters either for doing it, they still need to break even somehow. It is a sad thing though for the Montreal scene. If the Steve Lawler and Carl Cox bookings at Tribe and Opera were on better nights for my work schedule I def would have made the trip to Montreal this past weekend to check those out. And from what I have read so far Carl Cox did not disappoint :) I'm hoping Victor Calderone this Friday in Ottawa is good to, but it is Ottawa after all and I know I can't expect Montreal quality. |

it's that dreaded "trance creep" you're talking about :p
Celebration 05-06 had maybe a few hours of Oakie, etc, Cream 04 had but a few hours of Corsten; now you're seeing half the night shift to trance completely. Naturally househeads are not going like that. They are also not going to like bookings like Deadhouse and Fetta in the Bal en Blanc house room.. cash grabs if you will.
The bookings are not fresh.. and if they are, they reek of djmag top ten list. Even the Trancevestites :p are getting sick of Armin.
But of course "fresh" is a relative term, just ask the folks who regularly post in "choon of the moment" thread all the time ;)
As noted by a few in this thread, Resolution looks to be a huge drop off from as recent as the 2008 edition .... and as for Sensation.... well ..... :p
Looking at these trends, it makes you cringe at the lineup prospects for future massives a year or two from now |
