Sushi needs a new computer!

This is pretty mush the same a Domesticated's thread a few weeks ago.
Help me build a computer, COR!
Things I already have:
- Extra (keyboard/mouse/monitor/DVD-RW etc).
- Case (Antec p-183)
- Graphics Card (nVidia GeForce 9600GT)
Things I would like:
- A good motherboard
- a fast quad-core CPU, but not state-of-the-art (ie. not an i7)
- 4GB of RAM
- A couple of 500GB SATA hard drives (or should I just get a single 1TB drive?)
- Power supply that will run all of the above.
I'm also interested in people's opinions of Win7 Home 64bit.
Have I missed anything? Any help would be appreciated :) |

You know everything you need, just pick some brands.
Make sure to match up the chipset of your motherboard to the CPU (aka an Intel mobo with an Intel CPU), most motherboards these days are the same. You don't have to spend that much money on a decent motherboard.
I have a Intel Q6600 CPU and it's great, so I will recommend that.
Western Digital has decent hard drives. Get a Raptor drive from them, one of the 10,000 RPM drives to store your operating system on, and some regular 7200 storage drives.
Corsair or Kingston has good memory. Get one of the 2x2GB things. Are you planning on using a 64 bit system?
Most Power Supplies you choose will be fine. |

I don't like the idea of just picking random brands, especially not with computer gear. Hence, this thread.
Q6600 sounds pretty good, but I might go for something faster so it lasts me a bit longer.
Any PSU will be ok? Surely, I'd need one over a certain amount of volts?

Can you even buy Q6600 anymore? I remember buying that 3 years ago.
I'm not too up to date on hardware but I think the Quads are now Q93xx+.
Anyway quad core is pretty useless with today's applications. Probably just get a midrange dual core, like an E8500 or today's equivalent.
For motherboards I found that either Gigabyte or Asus make reliable boards.
The PSU is often the most neglected component in a PC build. If you're not gaming just get a decent one. I'd recommend a Corsair HX520 or any Seasonic if you can get them here.
Windows 7 is good. No complaints here. No reason to hang onto an 8 year old OS.
If you had a bigger budget then look at getting an i5 with a P55 chipset motherboard obviously. |

Don't cheap out on the PSU!!
My recommendations for brands would be (based on personal experience):
PSU - Seasonic
mobo - Gigabyte
RAM - Corsair |

What kind of voltage would you recommend for what I intend to run?
And yeah, I was leaning towards a Gigabyte MB actually, since my last 2 have been made by them and I've never had a single issue. Will all the new ones take quad-core CPUs without an issue? |
