South Korea > Pretty much everyone else in their group

I find it appalling that a team that managed to beat BOTH Italy and Spain in 2002 and reached the semis does not get the proper respect it deserves (the claims that they cheated are pathetic).

No, they are not. The amount of referee calls against Italy and Spain (mainly Spain, with 2 completely legal goals disallowed) was way beyond a coincidence and light years ahead of being just plain incompetence.

Do not forget that South Korea tied with France in the last World Cup - and France was the runner-up! The Korean defeat to Switzerland was their only shameful result this century... what else have the other teams achieved?

It's been almost 20 years since Argentina last did something impressive in the World Cup, Nigeria has never gone past the round of 16 (and that last happened in 1998), and Greece... well, the only time they entered the world cup (in 1994) they didn't even qualify to the later rounds.

Yes, I do.

LOL, France was completely pretty much throughout that WC. The only great game they played was against Brazil, whom they totally owned. Played decently against Portugal and only tied to Italy in the final due to a non-existing penalty.

Nigeria, as pretty much all African teams is a team that although lacks in the talent department when compared to other teams like Brazil, Spain, England, etc. has a lot of balls, and leaves their hearts on the pitch. Very difficult team to play against. Then Greece...well, they are a ing shame to football. :p

We can go the Austrian Economic route and compete with the other thread.

Aye! As an amateur philosopher and a lover of breasts, I must say Hayek's got a really nice rack:

These are libellous accusations, I demand proofs!

Easy group for England. I'm just worried about meeting Germany in the second round.

And you're talking nonsense, Lira. In terms of talent, Argentina are massively superior to South Korea, and even under that clown Maradona they should be superior.

I'm not afraid of Germany at all. They've lost what made them a great team, a solid goalkeeper and 2 world class centre-backs. They have ballack who's aging, Lahm who's good and a few good forwards but invariably just aren't at the top now and are a way off being so.

This is exactly why England need to do it now or do it never. We have the talent to do so if Capello picks it (which means dropping Rio on his last 12 months form) and the only team who are playing at a higher level than us are Spain. Brazil are beatable, Argentina a shambles under maradona, Italy are ok but not great, the Irish showed that they have a weak core, the french have a worse team than the 2002 one. Serbia are outsiders to get to the last 8 imo, they have some good players and the kinda style that did so well for croatia whenthey qualified. I'm still disappointed they didn't come through 2nd in the group and get there, as they're good to watch & have excellent fans.

holland and spain on paper have wicked players, but only now they realized that players need to work as a team if they are to win something

The Spanish yes, the dutch, no. They're not a team and they never will be. It's a shame because there's some talent but there has always been problems between individuals etc since the cruyff era. They are the best team in the world right now although Puyol isn't doing too well atm, if they get someone to partner pique they'll be formiddable

Precisely. It's like the whole team is on crack... and still organised!

In all honesty, I just want to see more strong teams outside Europe/South America. South Korea is by far the most promising squad in Asia, being the only (somewhat) successful non-traditional country in this World Cup. I think it'd be awesome if Australia, New Zealand, North Korea, Japan, Argelia, Cameroon, South Africa, Nigeria, or Cote D'Ivoire reached the finals as well... the finals are always appallingly European (apart from 2002), with the occasional country from Latin America breaking in.

Oman have the best goalkeeper in asia, one of my heroes. He'd be playing for us every week if we didn't have one of the worlds' best goalies who at 36 is still doing awesome.
Simcut
Got a sneaky feeling about Ivory Coast man, if they can get through the group of death I think they have a chance of winning the World Cup. I can see them finishing 2nd in the group (Brazil being top), with Portugal 3rd! :)

I might be biased but I'd say the us Dutchies pretty much are a team. Atm we don't have any worldclass defenders, but together they function very very well. And about the problems between individuals, that's just blown out of proportions. I won't call a little arguing about who gets to take a free kick a problem.

Let's hope van Persie is back soon enough, and that Robben isn't injured around June.

We're always given the impression that schneider, van der vaart, de jong and another midfielder I forget about don't get on. Maybe it's just a ruse to make us underestimate you :p

My fear of Germany has absolutely nothing to do with their ability on paper. England - Germany is basically a derby match anyway, so form goes out of the window. The Germans don't choke, we do. They always play above their potential, we always play under it. The Germans have a winning mentality and the ability to beat anyone at penalties. We have neither.
