He said to use software, so it's really a software versus Virus challenge.

He uses a virus alot in his production. I can spot a virus from miles away. :wtf:

So the real question is, does the virus Ti work terrible on Mac or something? I was thinking of buying a macbook pro ( if they update the hardware to core i3 or i5 in January ) or maybe core i7 iMac or Mac Pro.

But I have been hearing that Mac's cannot support 3rd party hardware that well in comparison to Windows and this only confirms it :(

Virus TI works just fine over here. Virus Control no problems. Every once in a while I get the "arp out of sync" problem, but thats uncommon and fixed quite easily with a stop/start in Logic. Works great in Live too.

I have tons of third party hardware plugged into my Mac and it all works without any problems. 3rd party computer keyboard, 3rd party mouse, 3rd party USB hub, Virus TI, Moog Little Phatty, MOTU MIDI Interface, Frontier AlphaTrack, 3rd party Firewire Hard Disk, 3rd Party MIDI Keyboard, and two 3rd party USB dongles. All plugged in at the same time, on the same machine, absolutely no problems.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I think I'll buy one in January :P

Well first I want to say no matter what I cant hear wtf hes saying. The audio doesn't work at all for me and I have all the addons I need so wtf.

After reading the posts it seems he was bashing hardware, the virus specifically, and then I saw alanzo chime in voicing similar opinions on it.

As far as I see it, I have NO CLUE what "too many presets" means. That is not a valid/reliable explantation for , except that there is most likely a larger fanbase for the virus which to me would speak more in favor of it then against.

After owning the virus for the time I have, I will say honestly its not what I was expecting it to be. It does offer a specific sound that is different from any software I've heard, but thats not in reference to actual sound quality or anything actually sounding "better". It really does just sound different.

I think what it really comes down to is invididual workflow. How you've incorporated the virus, how you use it, and how well you've learned to make it work for you. With that said I can say this. The 2 main reasons I got the virus was 1) sound & 2) virus control.

And at this point virus control works just as Alanzo said. Its ing horrific. I've tried 3 different ways to record the sound so far and am yet to get *1* single sample that its not raped with clicks, noise, and distortion. Not to mention I had to bust my ass just to get it syncing properly. The sound is not unique like I thought it was. It IS easily obtainable if you have any idea how to use software.

The only reason I'm still holding onto it is because I'm hoping I'll learn a way to make it work for me, but at this point it doesn't seem to be heading in that direction at all. I think I would have to stop using virus control, and get an audio interface, but not needing an audio interface was a large part of what sold me to begin.

So at this point Sean Tyas can on it, and "anything" can love his TI2 to death but one single fact remains which is most likely what I'll be deciding on.
Access advertises virus control as a HUGE selling feature. I have seen SO MANY people complaining about virus control, including myself, that is ALMOST literally seems virus control doesn't work right for a single person who has ever bought it.

And that makes me ask what kind of company is access?
What kind of company tries to build a reputation on false advertising? How is that NOT false advertising and isn't false advertising ILLEGAL. Other companies have been sued for what I consider Access to be doing right now, and that doesn't sit well with me at all.

I DO very much enjoy playing with my snow but I am NOT getting anything done and thats what I need to look at the most. In statisitics and research (what I've been doing a lot of for my uni lately) the ONE thing you're always taught to look at is the end result. 2 days ago was the first time I've sat down since I got the virus and not used it during my production. It wasn't so much that I "lost interest" but more that I just wanted to put a mix together, to just accomplish something.. anything.. and I DID.

Using nothing but triology and z3ta I made a track and felt happy. Listening to the bass in the track (from triology) I couldn't help but think "that bass really does sound better then any bass I was hearing from the virus" and it was a pretty big dose of reality. I don't need something to sound amazing, I don't ask for a lot. Even if virus control worked theres a good chance Id still feel like the virus wasn't what it was cracked up to be. But at this point I'm looking at my snow as I type this and theres a pretty big convinction inside of myself that its gonna wind up going back. I can jam out hitting keys, I can program some sick sounds on it, but I CAN'T use it for what I got it for, which is to make music, and under that respect I consider it completely useless. Its hard to say but I do feel to a degree that access is a company. I even emailed them last week cause I couldn't create an account on their site and they STILL haven't resolved anything for me. And at this point I'm really questioning why I even want to get an account in the first place.

My initial justification was "I can just get a refund" but the truth is that was the LAST thing I was hoping/expecting to do. But the truth you can never hide from. For the $1000 I spent on the virus, I could have got a sweet ass pair of new monitors and something else much more USEFUL. Thats what it comes down to and thats most likely why I'll prob be getting a refund. And at this point the way I see it, if most hardware is a pain in the ass like this, even if its somewhat better, its really not worth it for how easy software is to work with. The fact remains there is no other way I could have learned all this UNLESS I bought a virus to begin, so I don't consider it a complete waste of time.

Sorry for the rant!

Tyas' video completely convinced me that my Polar is garbage, so if you want mine, it's in the trash can on the side of my house.

I'm sorry you got turned off by the Virus. It is true - I was definitely not happy with V1 and got rid of it. V2 is better. Is it much better? Hm... not quite as much as I hoped. Definitely not the $1500 difference between used TI v1 and new TI V2. I do agree with you that software has come a LONG way and using something like sylenth or gladiator or omnisphere definitely gives virus run for it's money.

There's a "but" though. 5 - 6 years from now, I can still sell Virus and get some money out of it, while software we use today will be obsolete and likely worthless. If I can accomplish what I'm after on a hardware synth and it is a capable product - then it may make sense. Just take a look on ebay - Virus KB sold new for about $1700 in 2001. It is now worth about $700. Meanwhile, Kontakt 2, Cubase 3, Reason 2.5 and M-Audio sample libraries that cost me just as much back then are now... will at most fetch... $100 - $200 for everything.

Additionally, like you said - it's about workflow. For some people it's great to have buttons/knobs. For others... meh.

Don't compare SNOW to Virus TI2. Snow used similar DSP and mobo part leftovers from initial run, resulting in same issues that are plaguing V1 TI's. With version 2 it should be better. I don't know by how much.

Also, I know you may not wanna bother but did you try to go through the manual and read about optimizing your patches for maximum poliphony and performance? If not, I'd recommend it.

I understand that with Snow, you don't have much choice but to use Virus Control but that sort of defeats the whole "hands on" approach. I think if you actually went with a TI2 desktop, you'd be not as disapointed and frustrated.

Meanwhile, I've emailed your post to a guy I know who works for Virus. He may be able to help.
