In fact, the whole building is kind of cool.

That looks awesome.

What are/were you studying?

Do you actually have seperate seminars? When I was at uni, the practical and interactive study was done in seminar groups of about 10-20 people, so that everyone could get a good amount of time with the professor. Trying to do classwork with hundreds of students at once in a big lecture hall sounds like a ty method.

Most of my classes are small, about 30-40 students. On lab days we're broken up into smaller groups and we run through clinical scenarios with the simulation dolls.

I get that you're trying to insult my program though.

I just hate homework. I'm surprised I made it the whole semester maintaining the same level of interest all the way through. I felt myself losing steam the past couple of weeks, but I made it happen.

I totally feel you on this one. I was all revved up and ready to go at the beginning of the term, and now I am just like "bleh... I'll study later". Everyone seems to get that way though.

haha... yeah I understand; as you're close to the finish line you really have to force it sometimes. My last semester of my college career, the procrastination got out of control. I would cram for huge finals starting at midnight the night before, go strait through till test time at 9:00 am, then go to sleep afterwards. I also wrote a 30 page paper the same way... due on the last day of my last class ever, and began the research/typing process 24 hours before hand. I could never get away with that in the real world now. lol

LOL!! I haven't been that bad, but I am pretty bad for procrastinating. My last two assignments this term were completed with maybe an hour to spare before the deadline. I don't know why I do it to myself... it's so stressful. Haha!

I don't really give a about your program. I'm sure it's wonderful. The guy who made the thread isn't on your program, most mature students aren't on your program, most people in this thread aren't on your program, most lectures are a waste of time, most people talk through them because they know rapt attention isn't required and most of the self-righteous twats who glare at those who talk are the saps frantically and pointlessly trying to copy notes when they can/will cover the material again in seminars, online or just in a textbook under their own steam.

But, by all means, you guys can continue to talk about smacking ignorant bitches in the faces with all the conviction of someone who never will. I'm just adding a bit of perspective to the issue.

:stongue:

This is so true. I've noticed in class that it's usually the stupidest people who take the most notes. Those with half a brain sit there and actually listen, occasionally jotting down a point they know won't be found anywhere else.

So why bother going to class then? What is the point of sitting there and yapping away when you can do that as loud as you like somewhere else?

My one prof intentionally says stuff in her lectures and then puts them on the exams. She has even told us that the exams are based on 75% text, and 25% what she says in class. Yes, I am going to pay attention because 75% isn't good enough for me.

Lectures are helpful because the profs (or at least the good ones) elaborate on the material, give good references and interesting stories that make the coursework easy to memorize.

You're right, I wouldn't smack someone, but you can bet your ass if it wouldn't get me expelled and/or thrown into jail there are a few people I would most certainly would have smacked in the head to tell them to shut the up.

Go do distance ed. or something if you don't think classes are necessary.

I love the people who only write down the stuff that is on the powerpoint, not the stuff that isn't in the book that will actually be important.

What perspective is that, exactly? I actually don't need to take notes, nor do I like to. I happen to learn a lot by simply LISTENING, as do many other people. People talking in class is just plain rude. Maybe other jackasses don't take their class time seriously, but I, and many others, do.

Because you don't know until you're listening to the lecture just how useful it might be. If it's a good/important/interesting lecture I would listen with rapt interest from start to finish, but if I found it was boring/unimportant/rote then I would often chat to my friends. Not loudly or constantly, but then I've never been to a lecture where a large number of people talked loudly throughout. Some people (usually mature students) would often glare at us to shut up, more out of self-righteousness than anything else.

But seriously, I didn't go to an outstanding university full of good students. I'm very disparaging of most students in the UK because most of them are there for the sake of it, but I've never experienced what you're describing. If it genuinely is that bad in your university then I feel sorry for you.

It's just ing inconsiderate ffs. Not that difficult of a concept to grasp. But I guess it makes sense that you're not getting it if you went to a school full of retards.

The perspective that not all university lectures and young students are exactly like they are on your specialist course, and consequently the perspective that your sweeping generalisation doesn't really hold true.

Besides, if you're just listening and learning, you can always listen again online (which is always helpful anyway), and every chatty student will know this.

How can you listen when you're talking? Sure, not everything the prof babbles about is going to be relevant or test-worthy, but if you are mid-conversation and stuff does come up that is important, you're likely to miss it. Besides, just because you may think it's unimportant doesn't necessarily mean that everyone around you does too.

I pay a hell of a lot of money to get my education... I go to classes to listen to the prof. If your talking is disrupting that, then yes, it's going to piss me off. Not to mention that it is entirely ignorant to the prof.

Most students in first year University in Canada are 17 or 18 years old. My lectures are upwards of 400 people. Unfortunately, that strengthens the odds that I am going to be sitting beside a retard who wants to talk all class.

Like I said, if you don't think the lectures are worth it, do everyone a favour and don't go to them.

You can't always listen again online... not all profs/schools offer that. It's a one time thing, you either listen or you don't.
