the best part about Tiesto is that he's probably still 3 or 4 years away from hitting his prime

I thought we were talking about productions only? For DJing, yea Oakey and Sasha were probably the best but purely on productions I don't see how anyone in EDM was better than Chicane at his peak.
Maybe Oliver Lieb?

I would say Paul Oakenfold and that has nothing to do with the fact that I work with him. His sound then was so original and unique. He really cut through the genericness of "trance" and brung it. People are still trying to ID tracks from his sets from a decade ago.
I still think 1998-2001 for him was absolute tops.
+1
But it depends on how "prime" should be measured.
I don't think anyone was hyped as much as Oakey.. and the times i saw him in this period, he also had the records to live up to the billing.
I think thats the difference with Tiesto, Armin, Ferry or PVD of today; that they have followed Oakey's blueprint to superstardom/brandname but maybe due to timing, their prime feels much more forced than Oakey's ever did.

Again, Tiesto's prime is totally relative to what you're measuring it by. In case its selling out to rap-pop and making it as a mainstream name, then this year is going to be fulfilling a great amount of that potential.
Most of his long-term fans that can remember when he was a DJ and not a rockstar, would say 01-03 is definitely his prime, set-wise and tune selection it was at this time he stepped out of Oakey's shadows to reach the same level in his own right.

Do people genuinely that the peak of all EDM just happened to be the trance they were listening to when they were getting into the scene?
RapidFire
Paul Van Dyk 95-02, BT 95-02, Sasha 92-03
all three have released great stuff afterwards but nothing compares to those days imo.

Are you that surprised?

It's not so much the actual genre that was produced, I'm looking at it more so from the angle of what that artist was trying to achieve. In my view, I can't see many people being better at their peak than Chicane was for what he was trying to do with the music and how it affected people. Also the long lasting impact it's had.
Now of course a lot of that has to do with my own personal taste, but having said that I'm not aware of many artists who were incredible at their peak as much as Chicane. I'm asking who and you still haven't provided anyone.
Also, just because it's trance doesn't mean it's automatically inferior to anything else. Seriously, it's been a decade already. The elitist views are getting incredibly tiring.
