Cinematography was nice. Felt a little slow overall, but I guess it fit the story. I didn't get the emotional impact at the end that I felt Scorsese was going for. I'll hold back on the obvious film comparison out of respect for others who have yet to see it.

More or less. I'm still surprised so many people were surprised.
I completely disagree with you, the addition of uncertainty to the end was what completed the movie for me. I left the theater feeling as if I may have been delusional sitting through it, as well. It really got to me. As for the dialogue, I can see how it could annoy someone like yourself, really not the most eloquent or thought provoking writing I've ever seen. I felt it was bearable, though.

Given that we now know it was all faked, wouldn't it make sense that the dialogue would've been terrible throughout that part of the film? I'm really stoned right now, so maybe that's taking it a bit too far.

... and the "twist" was signaled pretty blatantly within the first 15 minutes of the movie. The denouement lasted about 20 minutes longer than it should have.
Yeah, it was pretty obvious within the first half of the movie. I was told going into it that it's one of those "see it a second time and you'll notice all of the hints" movies. I kept an eye out and had the plot pegged the second they said that her doctor had left the island; Kingsley's demeanor the whole time was pretty helpful, too. Trying to find the hints and figure it out actually made the film fairly enjoyable.
At the end of the day, I liked it. Definitely nowhere near Scorsese's best, but I'll probably watch it again once it comes out on DVD.

I'd like to retract my previous statement. This movie is ing win, simply because it features Casey Jones from TMNT I & III.

. Yes. Casey Jones.

I'll say that although I thought the cinematography was quite stunning in Shutter Island the overall story just didn't do it for me.
It was easy to tell where it was going very early on but it was still well done overall. Much better than most of the that's being made right now.
I would've much rather seen Scorcese do a straight up horror film however. Plus as mentioned before it really would've been just a better film overall if it had more Casey Jones.
It reminded me quite a bit of Session 9. Which is similar in ideas but felt that Brad Anderson really created something much creepier and more effective in the end. This trailer does not do the film any justice but I really recommend seeing this film.

That comparison is just not fair. Session 9 doesn't have Di Caprio in it and therefore doesn't suck. It's as simple as that.

Saw this tonight, it was much darker and creepier than I was expecting. I figured it would be a suspenseful flick, but it was very ed up in a lot of ways. I thought the character development was well done and while the main spoiler was figured out very early on (in my case, before the film even started), there were a few more facets to the twist than just the fact that he was the crazy one all along. I thought the story was great, the acting decent, and the twist a bit predictable. Not Scorsese's best but certainly not bad.

Depending upon your other interests, I suppose there may be some implicit spoilers in what I'm about to suggest, so:
SPOILER ALERT
Did anyone else feel like the storyline began to increasingly parallel the episode "Frame of Mind," in Star Trek TNG, during the climactic sequences at the end?
