Free and basic video editor

Does anyone know of one? I tried VideoThang but I just keep getting an error when I attempt to export the edited video.
I want to do the following:
1. Split/shorten an existing video
2. Place music over the top at an adjustable volume.
Thanks. No trial versions please. I want something 100% free. |

I actually opened this thread without seeing you were the thread starter. Thought it was a bot, and was just about to suspend :p
Not sure about free ones, sorry. My gf uses Vegas, which is pretty much the opposite of what you're after.
Edit: I just asked her anyway. She suggested Windows Movie Maker :p |

Windows Movie Maker is nice. It's the program I use to make my NY videos:
