wow no huh? lol! any time i have an opinion about music that disagrees with someone else here, i am crucified by all the fanboys for shattering their fragile candyland gumdrop world. and i swear it's only people in the west coast forum who don't understand what a ing discussion is. or maybe they do but they throw out "basher" and "hater" because they have nothing material to offer in response. i can't even say dj-so-and-so is not as good as a few years ago without people wigging out about it. all i'm asking for is someone who can challenge my views as i am challenging theirs--civilly. whatever though, i'll take emotional responses too... it's hilarious to me how easy it is to set off some people with a simple opinion. this is just a general rant, not specific to anyone on this thread.

look everyone in the world knows balance 005 was groundbreaking in 2003, hell even by today's standards, but that was 2003. if you made this thread then or even two years later, i'll bet most people would drop holden's name because of it and no one could argue. but a lot of other dope has dropped since then. gil i know you just came across that mix a year or two ago in my car so you're still hot on holden's tip, but really, as the biggest holden advocate on ta today can you produce a mix by him from the last 7 years that holds a candle to it? or that has remotely similar appeal? sure his sound is still uniquely his, but so are a lot of people's. that doesn't make him special. there are tons of djs with tracks that no one else has making their sound unique to all others. to say he's somehow specialer than other's is just fanboydom. if he were really that special you'd be hearing a lot more from him. i'm not saying he'd sell out arenas but big djs would be playing his music to the extent they could get it and big promoters would be booking him to the extent of his availability. so far you don't see either happening in the last 7 years. anyway, i'm not opposed to the idea of holden being amazing still, i just don't see or hear the proof of it. rizo, julia, if you have that proof, please share because most holden fans have moved on after idiots are winning landed.

i'm going to dl at the controls to see if i've heard it yet. i lost a good deal of my music a couple years ago and i can't remember if i have.

LOL really? "If he were that special he'd be getting big bookings and have his tracks played all over the place?" Weren't you JUST arguing with me about how thats exactly NOT how you determine the quality of an artist?

R!ICH I think you fail to realize that "staying true to the game" may translate to staying underground, working on projects and self growth that don't translate to immediate record releases for audience pleasure. What makes you think that just because someone is talented you are going to hear A LOT MORE from them? Aphex Twin is one of, if not THE MOST talented electronic artist to ever exist. When was the last time you read ANYTHING about him? Just because Holden sn't broadcasting his nuts in everyones face does not mean he has yet to come out with incredible material.

Thus far, James Holden has released great music, and has left it at that. Whether it was a few years ago, or a few months ago. What matters is that he currently stands with great work, and nothing less.

Have you read up on Aphex Twin? I don't even want to compare these two. But when I say true to the game, pushing beyond its limits would be Aphex Twin. He PULLED his own album from the radio/shelves so that it would not reach the top of the charts.

Anyhow, I hope you get the picture. It's not all about gigs/praise on forums and emo communities.

it wasnt even in your car at that auralism/com# party, just look at the date when i originally posted the holden thread on the west coast http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...threadid=481671 i was more into his recent stuff than balance 005 and still am. it was def a reminisce. so im not stuck in 03 or 06 with atc/tiaw. i dont recall what set jenn and i were listening to at our hotel after edc but we felt like starting a thread :)

im not calling you a hater or basher cause on most things i agree with you but theres some like this or cassy or even fairmont (you wanted harder stuff but i thought it was fine and what i was expecting) to name a few. but holden not having done anything in the past 7 years is wrong. i personally think atc is up there with his balance but thats based on my personal taste of music. love every track on atc. im not going to argue with the rest cause i never said he was the only one with a unique sound. as for his stuff getting played by big djs and getting booked, i could care less who plays his stuff but his booking at incognito was their biggest party yet so theres your proof.

edit: also satellite has tried to book him before [again], scott even said so on the james holden thread. theres 3 other promoters in sf alone who i know that want to book him at this moment too...

rizo, I'm glad we're on the same page. It's some of the best material out there, and it is highly unpublicized

ya i know it wasn't at the auralism party, that was jen's first time. that was probably the last person i played that cd for. i honestly can't remember when exactly, but i know that mix made a big comeback in 2007-early 2008 on harrison st when we were all doing shrooms every other weekend outside of 1015/endup.

i'm sure cassy was good at 222, i never disagreed with you on that since i wasn't there, i simply said she was boring the year before at kontrol. she had her moments, but overall the set went nowhere.

maybe in a different context fairmont would have been better for me, but i was expecting more along the lines of that youtube someone posted. it was still a really fun night, but the music wasn't the driving force behind that for me.

again i didn't say you said 'he was the only one with a unique sound' but others have. i like holden, i think he is true to his game, i just don't think he's done anything in a long time to be talked about as much as he has been recently here. and on the popular point of big djs and big promoters booking him, weak argument i know, but as an avid fan of underground music, i haven't seen his name on my radar at all outside of border community.
