Why do a lot of us seem to have much distain for commercial popular music?
Yesterday on the BBC, Dizzy Rascal was interviewed. For those that may not know his name, he is very much a pop 'artist' in the UK.
He made the point that whilst his tracks may not be the most intelligent, and the lyrics simple, at the end of the day all he wants is people to be happy cruising along listening to his stuff.
He doesn't equate a commercial sound and simplicity with failure, he measures his own personal version of sucess on the fact he makes a lot of people happy, period.
In a way I feel there is a lot of snobbery around music.
Reminds me of film critics that habitualy dislike anything the masses enjoy, lets say a Hollywood blockbuster, but fall over themsleves with praise for a Costa Rican subtitled black and white movie which no one will watch.
I wonder if we should perhaps appreciate what we might deem more worthy complex music, but also have space for the uber popular commercial stuff in out hearts.
For me, something having wide commercial appeal is just as intrinsically worthwhile and a more undergound trance track. |
I like some popular music, but lady gaga isn't it. You seem to be more into pop music than dance music to be honest mate.
I cant' stand the boring, repetetive (in the way that the same thing is released again and again) derivative, nonsensically lyric'd trash that is generally called pop music these days. I have no objection to commercial music, but the majority of it is directed at 12 year old girls these days, because thats the biggest music buying demographic. Its a simple unfortunate fact.
For an artist, the annoying thing about pop music is that its so homogenous. I love dance music because on any given day there will be heaps of releases on beatport and they'll all sound different. With pop, theres like one single release a day (if you're lucky) and it sounds exactly the same as the one released the day before. Theres not enough volume or diversity to satisfy my love for music.
Whats even worse, is that while a well track (of any genre) will last for years and still be just as classic 40 years on, a generic pop track will only have the musical depth to last a few weeks. After that it'll be forgotten. So if Dizzee Rascal wants to make music that people are happy to cruise along to (for the first three days after they bought his album) and then discard, then thats fine. But I want my music to last for years.
If you want to listen to music about bitches and ho's, or kesha or some other crap, go for it. I'll stick to my house music thanks. |

| Mad for Brad |
| not sure what how you made the weird jump to an SSRI. It is quite obvious English is not your first language so I'm not going to go thru all the polemics as to why you are the one with the attitude. |

| your acts shows signs of BPD or Bipolarity imo. |
|
|
| Mad for Brad |
| how so ? I have not wavered once on my stance that you are 4 IQ points short of a ape. And would you really prescribe prozac to someone with BPD ? Pharmacology and I suppose music and the english language are not really your friend. |

| i can bet one month of pay that i have more IQ than you and that im better at making music than you, and even that im a better pharmacist. i can also bet im better in english than u are in any of your second languages, which americans probably dont even have. unfortunately u cant even call me on the bet, its really sad to see that knowledge of yours is getting you nowhere. the end, im out of this pointless with you again. |

| I'm not American and your dick measuring invitation is graciously declined. What do you do for a living ? You seem pretty defensive on the pharmacology comment. |

| Mad for Brad |

| I think i've indulged your obsession quite enough. If you want to know more, feel free to send me a pm. I never assumed you were a pharmacist. You don't need to be one to be interested in the topic. I did glance quickly over your post and assumed you thought I was one so I apologize for that. I do admit that I don't accord your posts a full read. |
