China has 2 trillion USD in T-Bonds and some cash, not 100 trillion, slight difference there. And again you don't explain what you mean by "pull back."
I'm sure that there have been plenty of blog posts and editorials on how much of a "threat" this is, but I really think that a lot of these people don't understand economics. Obviously China wants us all to believe that it's a credible threat, but I'm not buying it.
I get the big picture here - China has an export economy, if they "dump" their USD then it hurts the U.S. more than China because the currency values are linked and the U.S. is an import economy and China is an export economy. Blah blah blah. So? Both China and the USA have the ability to devalue or revalue their currency at any time. They don't, because any significant currency manipulation would destabilize their own economies.
China is already starting to dump those T-Bonds. T-Bonds are debt, and frankly, I wouldn't want to be holding onto very large amounts of U.S. debt right now. The risks to China of holding that much USD as a reserve currency are far greater than the risks to the U.S. Frankly, I think these threats from China are really just a big charade to downplay the risk to themselves.
I've watched this time and time again in stock markets. Some major player dumps a huge number of shares, or the company does it themselves by diluting, everybody panics, the value plummets... and a few days or a few weeks later it's back to where it was before, because new money comes in as people realize that the swing was not much more than a hiccup predicated on emotion. Sometimes this all happens within the span of a few hours, depending on circumstances.
It's old news. Foreign governments aren't stupid retail investors who will watch China dump the T-Bonds and say "oh, we'd better dump ours too!" That's pure amateur hour. Unless there's a good, solid economic reason for the dumping, somebody else is just going to snap them up, driving up demand and bringing the price back up to an equilibrium point. And indeed, China isn't going to be able to "dump" at all unless there's a buyer, and it's in China's own best interests to try to get as much money as possible. If they just start giving away all of their reserve currency, they'd vaporize their own economy.
I still consider it a non-issue. But, in all fairness, I'm not an expert on currency markets. If somebody here is, feel free to prove me wrong. |
