Talking on this board about politics is like trying to explain nuclear fission to kindergarten kids.

How soon you forgot, whose land you took and moved in here 200 years ago.
Ignorance is a bliss, apparently.

On a subject of my earlier post about US of A going down, here's their GDP for 2008:

All these numbers openly available from http://www.ustreas.gov
As you can see, real production of material goods is only 14%. The rest is services.
So, explain to me how lawyer or sales manager will pay for his clothes or new TV, when all hell breaks loose and and every country will be for itself. Mind you, chinese factory worker wouldn't care about your MBA, he will want real stuff, not a bunch of printed green paper for his time.
What can you give him, except for next version of windows or new hollywood flick?

Coal, for one thing. They're importing over 100 million tonnes per year. How are all those factories going to keep running without it? Solar power?

Next major war will be about resources and countries who can defend their own.
How Canada will be able to do it on it's own, is beyond my comprehension.
Unless bunch of TO office workers will sign up for military and change their warm downtown office for not so warm shack in Nunavut :)

Don't worry about chinese, they know what's going on, and diversifying their energy supplies like no tomorrow.

Atomic energy, coal from Australia, oil and CNG from Russia and all kind of "stan" places.

holy koPoBa, I go away for a couple of days, and the thread is now about China. Yeah the thread title is exagerated... As if it's really going to happen... it's outrageous, it draws the reader like a tabloid headline... but like a good tabloid, it did prompt to ask ourselves 'what if'... and it did just that. I did not intend for TAs to start building their bomb shelters and make every Russian girl to be clearly identified by wearing those sexy military outfits pictured earlier.

So let's play a hockey game on the north pole for s and giggles, and drink Boilermakers, and be a happy family.

Blah blah blah, as soon as the facts don't fit your theories then you resort to vague hand-waving.

Evidently you don't understand the difference between thermal coal and metallurgical coal. They are completely different and not interchangeable. China isn't using coal for energy, they're using it in the manufacturing sector, and the U.S. and Canada account for, I think, more than 80% of those imports. If China stopped getting met coal, their entire manufacturing sector would be dead in the water.

The Chinese economy is anything but "diversified." That pie chart of the U.S. economy? That's what you want it to look like. That's diversified. You seem to be forgetting that 2% of a $10 trillion economy is still $200 billion. We're living under an interdependent global economy now, any major change to borders or trading arrangements or resource scarcity would cause temporarily destabilization, but if we're betting on which economies are more likely to survive a war or isolationist movement, I'm still putting my money on North America.

China has a convenient arrangement with the rest of the world, trading for most of their crucial supplies and services, leveraging sheer volume of exports and incredibly cheap labour for a stronger position. But if their exports dry up then so does their economy; Russia and eastern Europe aren't enough to support them, and an entire country can only live below the poverty line for so long (the Soviets proved that). The Chinese aren't idiots. They know as well as everybody else that exercising their "nuclear option" would be akin to dropping an atom bomb smack in the middle of Beijing.

What 80 women to 20 men? Yeah right...I don't find that the case. I think you mean 80 percent men to 20 women.

As for Eastern Europe, I need to get over there...doing one last time in the homeland this year though. w00t. Lemeso, Lefkosia and Ayia Napa here I come.

this summit was a joke!

(not just this article but on the news in general)
Jayx1
the summit was to discuss territorial disputes in the arctic oceans if im not mistaken. Sweden, Iceland, and Finland dont have arctic coastlines. Ergo the omission. As for "indigionous people", they have their place but not when it comes to discussing national boundries!!

Tiesto4Life
yes. however you can discuss all you want but its action must be taken. these disputes will go on forever cuz they are not taken as serious (even though they should). as far as territorial question goes, i dont see why they cant let iceland have something in this (finland/sweden i understand) but common give those icelandians a chance. its not like they are going to grab a load of resources from the arctic. maybe send a boat there once a year to grab a handful but that's about it.

With the US-Russia signing a pact with reducing their nuclear arms... this should be a synch lol

Either way we will all die sooner or later from a nuclear bomb or natural causes. I just wonder what will come first.
