Armada Bans Tracks from podcasts

Although this is not strictly production related, its pretty big news that strikes right at the heart of the piracy issue. As an artist who has many releases and sees my music show up on pirate sites hours after the official release, I have mixed feelings about a move like this. One the one hand I want my music to be protected. On the other hand, I do not think this type of totalitarian move is the right way to go, especially for the many users who use podcasts to assist in their search for new music.

What do you think of this move?

theres a couple of threads in the cor and md already about this. i think its funny lol, cant really think anything else about it.
if anything this will push the whole scene more in the direction i want, artist performance, but armada alone isnt big enough to deside anything (obviously they think differently which is part of the funny here) so this will only help themself going out of business which is good for all of us.

Yeah right; sue me ******s. Not only is this immoral because they didn't state that people couldn't use them in their sets PRIOR to purchasing; it's also wrong because there is no way in hell Armada is going to go after every dj that uses their tracks. On top of that there is a lot of grey area with what a podcast is and what is different/not a podcast. As far as i've seen thus far it just covers podcasts and itunes (seems a partnership has been formed there) and not radio shows and sets posted on forums from here and the like.

It's a pretty dick move and the only thing it means for them is a loss of a major promotional tool. They're several years behind with the whole piracy issue anyway. Online airplay has made them what they are now and suddenly they're shutting it down altogether.

The only way I can see this becoming an issue of any real force is if they somehow manage to get Apple to agree to remove any podcasts upon their request citing a breach of their terms.

The only other way it could have an impact is for Armada to get ty or use leverage with better known DJ's to get them to stop including Armada tracks in their podcasts.

Either way, the only results I can foresee is less awareness for Armada as less of their tracks will get airplay and a ton bad publicity for them.

That's precisely what has happened already. Menno De Jong had several of his podcasts removed from iTunes because Armada complained to Apple.

It seems like Armada would do well to consider pod-cast licensing fees (perhaps included with a purchase price?), and I'm wondering why that hasn't happened already, if, in fact, it hasn't happened already.

I'm probably over-simplifying this aspect of the business so please fill me in with particulars which contravene my uninformed opinion.

But why should I bother what that? As a podcaster, why shouldn't I just stop playing Armada tracks? There are plenty of other great labels putting out great music. I'd rather just avoid playing Armada tracks altogether and fill my sets with tracks from labels who don't pull this type of BS. I suspect that if Armada continues with this strategy for any length of time, other podcasters will do the same.

You should only do it if you want to support Armada and given the hinky behavior, I'd see why you wouldn't want to.

I'm thinking, however, that Armada's move has a lot more to do with using its own leverage with its usage rights by hampering the promotion of their competition - those who are included with the Armada tracks - rather than trying to protect Armada's intellectual property on their own. Of course Armada PR will say that the move also helps to protect their competition.

No matter how you cut it, there must be some phenomenal revenue stream they're counting on by making such a move. It is total douche-bag, through and through, but it's also kind of a game-changing tactic which creates a new hurdle in the market-place for everyone.

This is a blatantly stupid move. I cant image Armin Van Burren being A DJ himself thought this up.

And what does this have to do with piracy? Ripping music from a radio show = piracy now? Who does that besides beggars and bums who would not have put a cent into the music anyway? Stop wasting time on piracy solutions, when the biggest problem EDM and Indie labels face is distribution, commerce, and marketing.

The end game might be to get DJs to pay fees for playing tracks on their shows and DJ gigs. But I doubt DJs who have to pay these fees will support these type of labels who ask for the fees.
