if Russia's involved in any way shape or form, you bet your last tax return dollar that there will be some fall-out, especially with Poland being member of NATO as well.

Though, I don't think Russians were involved aside from providing a really ty plane. I recall as a kid I was scared less to fly Aeroflot. Sitting in one during turbulance was a horrifying experience - everything rattles and you think the wings will break off any second.

There was even a joke about russian planes:
A head designer Tupolev was looking for ideas how to improve ridgidity of the wings in his planes and announced a contest. Winning entry was by some random engineer, who suggested that wing ridgidity could be increased by introducing a perforation along the line where the wing meets fuselage. After number of tests, Tupolev's people confirmed that this did in fact improve ridgidity of the wing substantially. Tupolev invited the winner of the contest to meet him in person and asked "How did you get an idea for this? Was it some mathematical calculation? Was it some engineering secret we missed? What was it" The man replied "oh no, no no, it was much much simpler. The inspiration for this was our very own, Soviet toilet paper." Tupolev was bemused: "really? how come?" "Comrade Tupolev, when was the last time you saw our toilet paper rip along the perforation?", asked the winner with a shrug.

you're right - looks like they found prime suspects responsible for this... Arrogance and Gravity. Looks like late president was big on sweating his pilots and gravity - well... It is a hard habit to shake off. Black box expected to reveal "You arrogant ass! You've killed us!"

I'm just waiting for next year: when the new staff will take another old ass airplane that shouldn't be in service anymore, to commemorate this particular incident, and also crash.

anyway. turns out the pilot was told to go to Moscow or Minsk, due to heavy ass fog. and his dumbass (or through advice/pressures of other dumbasses on board) decided to ignore those suggestions, attempt the landing, and subsequently struck an NDB (big ass pole sticking out of the ground) which caused the crash about 200 meters from the actual aiport.

i dunno much about plane landings, but since the pole was only 20 meters high, and he struck it about a kilometer away from the landing, wasn't he coming in a little steep/low anyway?

seems to me like the glide slope should be a little higher than 20 meters while a kilometer away from your landing objective... but i'm not a pilot.
