Well, it comes from the Low Germanic word "daler", from German "taler" (1540, later thaler), abbreviation of Joachimstaler, literally "(gulden) of Joachimstal," coin minted 1519 from silver from mine opened 1516 near Joachimstal, town in Erzgebirge Mountains in northwest Bohemia. The German word "Tal" is cognate with Eng. "Dale" (which comes from the O.E. dæl, from P.Gmc. *dalan "valley"). The Continental Congress July 6, 1785, adopted dollar when it set up U.S. currency, on suggestion of Gouverneur Morris and Thomas Jefferson, because the term was widely known but not British.

That's why a "dollar" is called a dollar, I'm not making it up :p

You must be freaking awesome to talk to at parties

Guys, I don't know this sort of stuff by heart, I just happen to know where to look for information... I kind of need this sort of resource.

As for parties, I do have the tendency to turn them into mini-lectures when too many people are looking, but I think I only catch their attention because my front tooth is broken :p

I always hate replies like this on a forum :p

If ANYONE has ANY question, EVER, then they can google it. But often, if you post it on a forum, you can get a decent conversation going, that far transcends merely 'finding the information'.

It's fun to talk to people :p

I never said you shouldn't, I was just disputing the fact that Lira is some kind of lyrical God with more than a little tongue in cheek :gsmile:
