Contrary to what one would naturally assume about a volcano eruption (that it is hot and emits a lot of gasses and thus, contributes to global warming,) volcanoes ACTUALLY cool the earth and offset the warming because of their aerosols. Volcanoes emit a lot of material into the air (which is why flights are being held down to begin with) and all of these particles (even dust and ash) are called aerosols. These aerosols effectively prevent a large portion of solar radiation from reaching the Earth's surface (because they are not reflective like the gasses) and as such, allow the Earth to cool.
With this being said, they may dismiss Icelands C02 emission entirely because arguably, the amount of C02 will not reflect how much 'heating' is occurring. Conversely, they may measure both C02 and the aerosol levels and figure it out from that.
On a somewhat related note, there are some proposals for trying to prevent global warming in which they would generate aerosols and distribute them into the troposphere intentionally. |

| It looks like a slow-motion, thermal image of an SBD. One that can keep planes grounded for days. Righteous. |

They are sending test flights through it and the airlines are now trying to get approval to start flying again.
After reading about the several flights that have been severely damaged by volcanic ash, I don't understand why they would even do this. It seems like they are willing to take a huge risk and put a lot of lives at stake. Personally, I would tell my airline that they can put me on the flight... next week. Forget that. |
