It's usually pretty safe to just scream out 'HEY!' to let the thieves know that others are watching and bring it to their attention, or press/pull the emergency alarm if possible.

Someone should've pressed the yellow emergency strip in this situation. That's what it's their for.

I totally agree with you. You have to worry about your very own being if something like this happens. It can turn from one victim into two and you really don't know what the attackers are capable of or what they can potentially do.

I remember living in Hamilton and going to school in Torono, I would take the go bus every morning at like 6 am.

One morning it was raining and I was huddled into a store front to stay dry and there was a woman in next store front doorway also waiting for the bus.

An older native american man came strolling along with a broken bottle in his hand. He walked up to the woman and ordered her to give him 50 cents for the bus.

She kept repeating that she didn't have it and he then brought the bottle up and threatened her with it. Now my dad was a cop before and taught he to do what's right so I put myself between the broken bottle and the woman. I told the man that she prob didn't hav 50 cents or she would probably give it to him.

He than asked if I had fifty cents and pointed the bottle towards me now. Sure I was a little frightened, thank gawd someone walking on the street behind him caught his attention and he gave up on me.

I am proud of what probably no one else would have done. People need to lend a helping hand more.

I have had a friend try and stop a fight outside of a bar involving people he didn't even know. He was stabbed in the heart but was saved.

There is def a risk involved and people just don't value other people enough to put themselves at that risk. I think it's pathetic.

I disagree, maybe if there is a weapon being brandished you need to think a little harder but if you let them get away with it they will continue to do and it could be someone you know next. At least take the attackers attention away. Threaten that your calling the cops, do whatever but to stand by and watch is truely revolting.

As bad as it sounds I dont think anyone should help a person if its a violent situation...no matter how big and strong you are. Its not worth you getting shot or stabbed, you never know what weapons a person may have hidden.

Call the cops or press an emergency button.

However its sad how many people wont help in a non violent situation. I was walking home the other day and a homeless person fell down in the middle of the street at church and dundas. Cars were honking at him and trying to drive around him, he was clearly hurt and so many people walked by (I was pretty far away at this point). Finally an old woman went to help him and then all of a sudden 5 other people rushed over to help too. Made me think back to the thead about how rude toronto people are...

but in the same sense all this relates back to the diffusion of responsibility theory, and sadly not helping people in large group situations is just human nature.

Exactly. How freakin' hard is that? To sit there and do absolutely -all is astounding!

Putting myself in the way between an attacker with a broken bottle and a victim is something I honestly probably wouldn't do, unless I know for sure I can safely control the situation. You couldn't possibly know whether or not he had the 'guts/balls' to actually do it. Say he does do it and you end up in a hospital or losing an eye or something or perhaps your life, was it worth it to get in the way or interfere with it over 50 cents? That's a question people have to ask themselves. I probably would've gave him the change or even a bill or bus ticket if it was me just to deescalate the situation. Ofcourse I would try to call the cops or press the panic button but it's a lot easier said than done. If it was someone I know then the whole situation would be different and I wouldn't think about it for a second. But for a stranger I would proceed with caution, I guess I'm just not that great of a Samaritan lol. :S

I'd love to see something like this in front of me...

I have A LOT of frustration and anger bottled up just looking for an outlet...

Yeah... I grew up being taught if I was ever mugged to not fight back, just give them my wallet, phone, whatever... There is no material object that is worth potentially loosing my life. If I wouldnt fight for myself, why would I for someone else?

My little brother got robbed (with a fake gun in Barrie Suburbia) and just let them have everything... sucks he lost his wallet and phone but the cops said he did the right thing.

No question. I would be right in amongst this particular situation if I saw it. I wouldn't even miss a beat.

It's a bit of a problem actually, I distinctly lack self-preservation (just ask the group I was with in Miami.... lol).

I would always hope that my intervention diffused the situation. Either way, I have never and would never turn the other way.

EDIT: If I was being mugged, I would just hand everything over. I may lack self-preservation when it comes to the protection of others but I am not daft. As Tara said, there's no material possession that's worth getting hurt for.

so the question is, should you be allowed to carry a weapon to defend yourself from crooks?

I am not sure how i stand on that one (shocker!) LOL
