From what I've seen and who I've talked to, the smoking ban hasn't had a huge overall impact on the restaurant/bar industry. What it has done is changed the mix within the market. There has been a decrease in bar patrons, but this has been counteracted by an increase in the family restaurant segment. |
Then you are wrong. It HAS had a huge impact. It has obviously changed the face of the industry. And considering that in most cases, bar/club jobs cant be transferred to restaurants, that leaves a lot of jobless people.
And a "family" restaurant includes place like mcdonalds, the likes of which would have expanded with or without the smoke ban. |

And here is the disclaimer that nullifies the whole story:
So how responsible are they then? 99%? 1%? They didnt say. Do they even know? |
It certainly does not. It is still a valid claim because the areas studied outside of Toronto were subject to the same 'other forces', and the incident rates did not go down as much as Toronto.
| quote: | ...The study is based on an analysis of hospital admission data for the 10-year period between 1996 and 2006 that spans a period before and after a smoking ban was implemented in Toronto. Researchers also looked at data from two other jurisdictions where there were no smoking bylaws – Halton in suburban Toronto and Thunder Bay in Northern Ontario – for comparative purposes.
The City of Toronto introduced controls on public smoking in three distinct phases: In 1999, it required all workplaces to be smoke-free; in 2001, smoking was banned in all restaurants and; in 2004, the ban was extended to bars.
...
Dr. Naiman said this shows the impact of legislation but also serves as a reminder that during the period studied, 1996 to 2006, there were other important policy changes. Those include increases in tobacco taxes, new advertising rules for tobacco products, graphic warnings added... |

How the hell do you know what you're talking about since you aren't in any position to see the big picture in the entertainment industry and how the smoking ban has effected it???
And it's tumbleweeds rolling by not hay jackass... |
As a patron of the entertainment industry, I have every right to state my opinion of my perception of the businesses that I use. When I go out, bars are busy, clubs are busy, restaurants are busy.
You guys are whining that your work has been cut, and that your industry has been negatively effected by the smoking ban. How about the two recessions that rocked the world in the last 10 years? The increase in food prices, therefore the increase in a restaurant bill?
Yup world wide economic conditions have no impact on elastic markets like entertainment.
PS - I do work in the entertainment industry. I work for an animation studio. ;) |

As for entertainment. I can tell you that as a person who works in the entertainment business, there has been a marked reduction in patronage since the complete smoking ban. I went from 5 nights a week to 2 since we werent able to stay open on "off nights" anymore. Even the weekends saw a reduction of at least 1/3 of patrons.
Several colleagues at other establishments told me of similar stories.
People didnt STOP going out but they are definitely going out LESS. |
don't you think that might have something to do with the downturn in the economy as well?
you can't make a statement like that without at least a study verifying that the reason why people go out is because they can't smoke indoors. Disprove the universal to prove your specific! |

the impact was almost immediate right after the smoking ban. |

id like to see exactly how they got these numbers. As in, who is included in this study and what the factors and criteria are that determine that one is being hospitalized for respiratory illness.
Its kind of like how they excitedly informed everyone that "We have had a record number of smog days" in toronto the summer after they lowered the threshold for what a "smog day" was  |

You say that yet you provide no proof to substantiate your own arguments. |

Guy, you could suck at your job. The specific company you work for could be doing poorly, contrary to the market average. You could have stopped sucking your boss' dick, and he got mad and docked your pay.
Why did you even bother writing that? |

If you're hard up for money, maybe you should consider saving some by taking public transit. Lol. |
