It doesnt even have to be tomorrow... here is your answer today!

Smokers should have to butt out near Toronto athletic fields, city councillor Paula Fletcher says.

Fletcher, the chairman of the city’s parks and environment committee, told the Sun Tuesday she would like city council to approve a ban on smoking around sports fields before this fall’s municipal election.

A ban on smoking within nine metres of playgrounds, wading pools and splash pads was approved by council last year and should take effect this summer, Fletcher said. She sees an expansion of that ban to athletic fields as the logical next step.

“These, I think, are no-brainers and pretty popular things to do,” Fletcher said.

“It’s not because we don’t like (smokers), it’s because it’s not a good thing to do.

“Those to me make a lot of sense.”

Fletcher said the rationale for banning smoking at playgrounds or athletic fields is the same: Kids often use the facilities and shouldn’t be exposed to second-hand smoke or smoking behaviour that they may try to mimic.

Fletcher’s comments come a week after Vancouver council voted to ban smoking at all city parks and beaches.

Closer to home, Peterborough is considering a bylaw that would phase in a citywide smoking ban for its parks and beaches by 2012.

But Fletcher said she doesn’t think Toronto should rush into an outright smoking ban for all parks and beaches.

“Would we prohibit you from smoking on a park bench alone? It’s not in the cards at the moment,” Fletcher said. “I would want to make sure that had tremendous support among Torontonians.”

Toronto Public Health referred questions Tuesday about expanding a smoking ban to the city’s athletic fields to the provincial government.

Note the part i highlighted. Obviously this is about more than second hand smoke which is a red herring in itself especially when dealing with the outdoors. Its about who this councillor and the anti smoking dingbats feel should and should not be a role model. Who are they to make this decision? Paula Fletcher is far from any role model id want to demonstrate to kids!!

Unbelievable.

So, is how the bar scene doing in Toronto? Dead right? Since nobody can smoke, they now stay at home, drink by them selves, and inhale all the cyanide they want to.

There was absolutely nobody in bars last night on college. It was a ghost town. Nobody was eating in restaurants, I think I actually some hay roll by.

Oh this just in: Toronto smoking ban leads to decline in hospitalizations

Funny how you just gloss over anything that is counter to your own agenda.

And here is the disclaimer that nullifies the whole story:

She stressed, however, that new rules were not solely responsible for the dramatic health dividends that came about.

So how responsible are they then? 99%? 1%? They didnt say. Do they even know?

As for entertainment. I can tell you that as a person who works in the entertainment business, there has been a marked reduction in patronage since the complete smoking ban. I went from 5 nights a week to 2 since we werent able to stay open on "off nights" anymore. Even the weekends saw a reduction of at least 1/3 of patrons.

Several colleagues at other establishments told me of similar stories.

People didnt STOP going out but they are definitely going out LESS.

How the hell do you know what you're talking about since you aren't in any position to see the big picture in the entertainment industry and how the smoking ban has effected it???

And it's tumbleweeds rolling by not hay jackass...

Are there any studies that attempt to isolate exactly how much of the reduced patronage is actually because of the smoking ban?

Good question. But study or not, i can tell you firsthand what it has done to clubs and bars based on what happened to my paycheque.

How one can even compare health care to the entertainment industry is just plain ridiculous. Lol.

you could argue that since the United Nations says that poverty is the #1 source ill health in the world, that putting people out of work with smoking bans is actually more harmful than smoking. But then again, that would be using the same kind of false logic and loose association that the anti smokers like to use with their arguments.

From what I've seen and who I've talked to, the smoking ban hasn't had a huge overall impact on the restaurant/bar industry. What it has done is changed the mix within the market. There has been a decrease in bar patrons, but this has been counteracted by an increase in the family restaurant segment.
