Advanced beginner.
I'm at a stage where I don't have as much time to do as much as I'd like to, but when I do find time, the motivation/mental energy often isn't there. I'm also at a stage where I find it hard to stay focused on any one style for any period of time, and I like it that way. The only consistent characteristics in my songs are (usually) female vocals. Aside from that, my style is all over the map, I think. But, I definitely feel unconstrained, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. The only drawbacks I can think of are: (1) that I get annoyed when people criticize my songs for not fitting neatly into some little genre box, because that's never my intention, and (2) even though I don't feel constrained, my stuff usually ends up being very mainstream sounding and I don't experiment as much as I could.
Oh, and like Eric, I'm finding it far too easy to watch sports these days - I'm an NHL fanatic, it's playoff time, and my two favorite teams (Red Wings and Sharks) are playing each other! |

| I'm at the stage where i'm still struggling a lot with technology... i know where I want to go with my sound but a lot of the time i can't create the sound or arrangement I want. Going to study a lot more once i get off school... time is also a problem =/ |

Hey John! I don't perform live anymore - I used to back in my younger band days. The girls do some gigs on occasion, but they have a DJ spin the backing tracks. Our buddy Avery Parker (TA member justjabbin) who collaborated on several of our songs, usually DJs their live sets. I'm not sure if they have anything coming up, but I'll check. If you're in the Sacramento area, let me know! |

I believe I am at the same stage Tiesto and Corsten were right before their first major mainstream releases.
Everytime I sit down I feel like its just a matter of weeks now. I just need to get the right idea and execute it. |

As far as where I'm at things have been developing well now for many months despite lots of illness and a pretty dramatic year for the family. I'm just getting able to put in consistent time nightly again. What really made things easier for me was when I bought the Beats By Dre headphones. On average I only can run the studio for a few hrs during the workweek because of some bitchy neighbors so I do most of my work in them.
I think people really don't understand how important it is to hear the ENTIRE frequency range when mixing down tracks or dj'ing. I'd say about 85% of my work is done on the headphones and then I go in and make a few minor adjustments on the HS-80s and they're good to go. The low end is so important in EDM I think what really separates good to great tracks production quality wise is the low end. It can mess everything up or make it all sheen and sound perfect.
Anyways these days I'm finishing up many of my older projects I didn't ever finish for whatever reason so that I can get back to making some original work. I feel strongly that finishing every track you start is a huge plus. There are things you force yourself into learning that you may never otherwise reach because you weren't in the situation before. Because of this now everything feels seamless in the process from the starting point of the song all the way through mixdown/mastering.
I'm really starting to see how some of these guys can pump out a fairly good amount of tracks and still keep them all impressive. |

Enjoyed reading this thread.
I don't seem to have a shortage of ideas, but mixing for me is the hardest part - I mainly use 5" Yamaha HS50's in a non treated room. I also have larger fostex but they are too bass and treble heavy.
I take much more time in sound selection and editing now as I think this is where you can really make a difference to the finished result.
Had one track recently signed to a decent label, but I feel I have a way to go before I'm happy I have the ability to run with the best in the biz, indeed a lot of the time I have self doubt whether I really have the ability of the best pros.
What I never lack is energy or enthusiams - I will literraly do 2 - 3 hours per night come rain or shine, even christmas eve, even after an 8 hour car journey - nothing ever dampens the fire - which can be a bad thing in some ways:rolleyes: |

| After two years of constant practise and geeking i'd also consider myself an advanced beginner. I think a background of musical training and once being in a rock band and playing live possibly saved me a year or two of extra learning and my main issues were mostly technical. |

HA!!! They're nowhere near each other. Sacramento is a 6-8 hour drive north of Hollywood. |
