Shark Attack in Hollywood? (pg. 4)

Insomniac didn't do so well trying to start something at Henry Fonda though.

They have the massive scene down, but not the club scene.

BTW, if any promoter was lined up to do something on a Friday night in LA right now, it would be Insomniac. They just need a team that knows the club scene and I mean KNOWS the club scene, but isn't too far into to think outside the box in street promoting and other areas. But again, with them so big in massives, it will always be a huge conflict for them - book a DJ for a club or for their massives, because there's going to be lots of times where they won't be able to do both.

Because ,I don't think promoting directly outside of clubs has as much impact as it used to. With the internet, social media, economy (less poeple going to the clubs themselves), a billion other things that are on people's mind...gotta think outside the typical box. Even social media sites (first myspace, now facebook) are becoming so inflated with events being promoted on them, more and more people are just hiding those promoters from their walls or almsot see it like an ad on a website and their eyes just train themselves to look past it. People LEFT MySpace because they were just being bombarded by promoters on there.

The problem is that trance tends to be the "gateway" into EDM as a whole. It's the most marketed genre world wide, thus giving it the most exposure here in the US, and in Los Angeles specifically. The core trance crowd is just a revolving door of newbies that eventually move on to house, techno, progressive, etc.

Of course, LA still has its die-hard trancers who have moved past the all-ages scene and into the club scene. However, that ENTIRE group can be found at Circus every Saturday night. Bottom line, there isn't a big enough scene to support a big Friday trance night in this city.

do you have data to support this? you can't even find a trance label in the top 20 highest sales per label on beatport. the only EDM artists i can think of that get actual FM play in the states are the usual sinclar/guetta/tiesto(who def is not trance anymore). i do agree that trance and the whole indie-electro thing is a much younger audience so that makes sense why dave is correlating a decrease in club turnout because of the massives but saying trance has the most market share seems inconsistent to me?

I agree real trance still lives at Circus. I haven't been to Avalon in years now.. not sure if they play other than house, from what most people mention. I also thought trance had a bigger audience, well atleast in europe, india, asia etc. I myself personally started with house and move to trance/progressive. I see many post how they moved in the opposite direction.

i think a weak trance crowd has to do with the venue and dj.

i saw armin van buuren at RED on a monday night last year..it was PACKED. Sander at Sutra a month ago was PACKED. Markus Schulz next week at sutra is going to be packed. does everybody at sutra like trance? most likely not, but it's a nice venue with a good looking crowd so it attracts guests.

circus is an awesome club..if your a trance nut. but it unfortunately does not appeal to clubbers that are not into trance. 100% if they did a test run at a known club like Playhouse, it would draw a bigger crowd.
circus is just too 'niche'.

Actually, you make a case for one of my points. You won't find trance labels in the top 20 on Beatport because DJs buying tracks at that site have moved on from trance. You don't start spinning EDM until you've listened to it first, right? DJs are perfect examples of people who may have found EDM by way of trance, but have moved on to different genres as they were exposed to other sounds. Just ask Clovis about this LOL. I am also a good example for this. I listened to trance for a couple years, then "graduated" to house and progressive. This was about when I started buying records to teach myself how to spin. My tastes have since been refined to include deep house, tech-house and techno.

If I'm not mistaken, Beatport enjoys a much smaller percentage of the DJ track sales in Europe when compared to other sites like Juno, Traxsource, DJDownload, etc because of monetary exchange rates. Trance is also more highly regarded in Europe whereas the US favors the crossovers like Guetta and Sinclar. These guys produce "house" tracks with a pop-music format at BPMs much slower than trance tracks. This appeals to the US pop culture more than that in Europe, where the general public keeps a more open mind about what they hear.

I'd be willing to bet that trance tracks on iTunes have a larger market share than Beatport because the tracks are cheap. The casual listener/club-goer does not have a need to buy tracks at 320kbps or in .wav format.

Keep in mind the Circus is much larger than Red or Sutra.

You left before the headliner? Why even go D:

You missed out on an amazing set.

Btw, that opener bored me to tears, so I just sat down until Cressida came on.

The music early Friday night was a lot more housey (I think Christian Couture was spinning at that time), definitely not the usual uplifting trance. There were people on the dance floor around 10:30pm but by 11pm it started clearing out. I took off before Cressida because my friends and I couldn't get into it.

Almost every time I've gone to Shark Club, with the exception of last week, the dance floor was quite busy late into the night. I would be surprised if this week the floor wasn't packed.

I'm one of those people that has been going to Shark club instead of Circus when it's been the same artist.

(Kyau vs Albert, Cressida, and this coming week Lange (plus dj shah!!!)

Apeattack already listed that the vibe and sound system are better at Circus, but also, the dance floor is so much better at Circus. There's way too much traction to shuffle at Shark Club where as the smooth concrete of Circus is beautiful.

Also, in addition to the cost (free / low cost) of Sharkclub, parking is also free. Although I don't use the free valet parking, I trust parking my car on the street in Costa Mesa. And as mentioned previously, the drive is closer for those of us in OC

Finally, one other point is that the drinks are huge and made decently strong at Shark Club where as a non Ernesto drink at Circus can be pretty mediocre @_@ and expensive. The lines at Shark Club can be a bitch though.

the events at the Henry Fonda are being relaunched... June or July I believe. not really sure why they had the parties right around WMC and stopped but its supposed to go weekly again. I know Sander K. is playing in June or July...

The opener bored me to tears too and I was with friends who were kinda iffy about going in the first place, so we left before midnight. Had I been alone I might have stuck it out until Cressida came on.

The floor at Circus at the beginning of the night is usually pretty good, but often becomes stickier as the night goes on due to spilled drinks, sweat, etc.

Do you park across the street from Shark Club? I tried doing that opening night but a security guard saw me crossing the street and asked that I get the free valet instead. They didn't want to upset people in the local neighborhood I guess.

Armin Van Buuren would fill Circus with the curtains open any time. So would Above & Beyond, John '00' Fleming and many others from the Spundae era. But when was the last time they played at a club in LA on a Saturday?
