it never existed outside the mechanics of the human brain: only as a persistent perception with no external reality, like the virtual image of the text you are reading on the screen right now.

so it 'goes' no where, as it never 'was' any where.

This explanation relies on a vague definition of a spirit as something other than biological consciousness but if spirit is defined as a biological, sentient consciousness, then your explanation is flawed.
