well, no I'm not kidding because the agenda items he, Pelosi, and Reid have passed and/or want to pass are not supported by a majority. and they don't give a . representative republic? Ha! |

I didn't remember you complaining that Bush's presidency was illegitimate due to the fact the majority of people voted for Al Gore. |

If our system was a "popular vote = presidency" system rather than an electoral college one, then I would understand. but it's not. |

But you're the one who's touting the importance of the "majority". Just as it's legal to win the election in the electoral college its also legal for all voted representatives including the President to do what they think is right despite the current public opinion. You can't have it both ways. Our fore fathers knew the majority isn't always right. That's why we don't allow lynch mobs to dole out justice, or poll public to determine someone's innocents. You're using the majority argument only if it suits your purpose. |

So then you were cool with Bush refusing to leave Iraq "despite the current public opinion" because he thought it was right? Sure it's legal but it is also tyranny, and destructive to our federal government in general. By your rationale, you support the idea of Obama waking up one day and saying, "Presidential term limits are now over because I believe nobody can lead this nation as well as me". Do you think it's a positive thing for a person to be elected to a position, and then knowingly break promise after promise that was the basis for them getting elected because they decide their vision of things is different than the electorate?

I'm not talking about simple majority rule... I'm talking about a representative republic. And those who were elected as representatives of the people are not doing so because they believe they know better. Winning an election is not a blank check of power to do whatever you want and believe is best for the people. Our founders are rolling over in their graves right now. Look what happened in California yesterday. People are cheering the legalization of gay marriage, but what really happened? We had a single Federal judge overturn a legal State decision made by 7 million California voters to make same-sex marriage unconstitutional in their state. The people of CA properly amended their own state Constitution through the legal process. But 1 Federal judge (who is gay) reversed it because he didn't agree with it. If your vote in California doesn't count, and outcomes are at the discretion of a Federal activist judge, then what have we become? |
