I'm pretty furious myself. I think it's really shady, inconsiderate and a low blow move for them to promote that The Martinez Brothers would play "early." A lot of people had events that they were planning to attend afterwards and as a result this party was in their best interest since we'd assume TMB wouldn't start at 10:00 pm latest if they had a 2.5-3 hour set. We totally got ed over. I have reason to believe that this was done on purpose. Not disclosing set times is enough proof for me. This looks really bad on the promoters. I had to miss a few hours of Luke Fair! Not only that, but by the time TMB came on it was just before 1 am and they had lowered the volume levels to more than half way. It was low enough to barely be able to hear the bass and thus have no desire to dance. I tried moving closer to the front, but it just wasn't enough. It's a shame really, because I was enjoying what I could make out from what they were playing. It's expected that at some point later in the night, a noise complaint could be made so WHY would they get TMB to play last?! Unbelievable. I peaced out and Luke and Add2Basket saved my night.
It's unfortunate because they night had a lot of potential that got flushed away in an instant. Loved the venue, location, crowd, and the tunes all night were great. I don't know if I want to attend another party if it's going to be falsely promoted and I'm going to be conned. |
this is the 2nd time where you're review is word for word the way i feel about a party.
came in with lots of hope for a great party and left very disappointed. and people around me know that in the beginning i was enjoying myself very much as the music was really good. totally right up my alley. but there's only so much one can take before a person's mood goes way down and no amount of good music can bring it back. and turning down the volume is definitely not the way to do it.
instead of leaving with a smile on my face, i left very disappointed. next time, i'll just stand outside the venue and enjoy myself there w/o having to pay $25 or more. |

This was my first time @ Sunnyside and I thought the place was awesome!!! I think people should host more day time parties at this venue.
I wish I would have been able to stay for the Martinez Brothers set. I promised to drive my friend’s car back to my condo when we all decided to go. We had a long day leading up to the party, plus all the traffic to get to the venue. I believe I we left 5 mins after the Martinez Brothers got on…..
I completely expected the night to play out as it did. I’ve seen this done hundreds of time people.
Overall I had a ton of fun with my friends, the venue and all the hot ladies :tongue3 |

| I guess I should add it took me 2 hours to get to the venue on Lakeshore (did not help people moods walking in). Also I arrived at 10 pm. |

good tunes but WTF was that with the boys coming on way after 12? I mean , I didn't pay 25 bucks to see a bunch of people I've never heard of before spin wtf was the point of telling us to come early, when the headliners started at a regular time?
friends were leaving left and right, some of them tired of waiting, the others pissed at low music level
I'm not sure if I'll be back for any of these parties again..
not sure what else to add - waiting was the biggest party buzzkill ever - having known that this would would be the case, we would have just went to FW right away |
I almost never reply to a review of one of my events (especially when they are negative reviews, I learned that lesson long ago...) however, I will attempt to explain why certain decisions were made for this event, the biggest one being the request for people to arrive early and not posting set times. There's also the decision to leave our advertising the same as it was for the original start time of 2pm, most notably, this statement, "The Martinez Brothers are playing an early set, ARRIVE EARLY!"
I'll do this point by point so i don't start to ramble...a bad habit of mine.
Boogie Inc. 5 Year Anniversary w/ The Martinez Brothers @ Sunnyside.
- Boogie Inc. events for the most part are deep and soulful house music events. I still always post my events on Tranceaddict event though the majority of people on this board are not huge fans of this style of music. However, once in a while there are headliners and out of town special guests that I book for my events that cater to a much wider audience, The Martinez Brothers being a perfect example of this.
- Most of the people on this board were coming to see TMB and not any of the other DJs on the bill, or as one of you has described, "a bunch of unknown locals". Perhaps they are unknown locals in your cirlces, but trust me when I say that they are the creme of the crop in deep house circles. As your friends we're "leaving left and right" there was well over 1000 people absolutely loving the music with their hands in the air...just as you would if it were your favorite local at a techno or trance event.
- Sunnyside events must end at 3am sharp or we face heavy fines.
- When I originally had this event planned for a 2pm start time, I was able to give the talent bookings for this event some variety and book outside deep house tastes so that everyone attending, not just the deep house crowd, would have something to listen to and dance to before The Marintez Brothers went on.
- Monkey wrench in my plans #1 - As I mentioned above, I planned the event according to the 2pm start time and not until AFTER i had finished booking all the DJs did I find out that the owners of Sunnyside double booked the venue for the daytime and there was a corporate event that caused us to get bumped. This resulted in completely screwing up my original musical programming. I ended up having to axe a few DJs from the bill and try to work out set times that still kind of made sense for the DJs that I was able to keep...
- We tried to decorate the pavilion and do a little bit extra for this event with the LED lighting panels in the booth and wraps on the trees etc... with the 8pm start it was a major challenge getting all the decor, sound and lighting set up in only three hours but I think we pulled it off.
- For the people complaining about the sound... that is pretty much as loud as we can get away with at Sunnyside without getting shut down by the police. It something that has always really bothered me about Sunnyside, and if I could go all out and put together a massive sound system like I usually do when I have the luxury of building a custom system, I would... but I can't :( We do our absolute best with sound at Sunnyside (I've heard MUCH worse at outdoor venues elsewhere...)
- Monkey wrench in my plans #2 - Shortly after I got the first set of bad news about the daytime element of this event getting axed, I also found out that this was the weekend the Gardiner Expressway was getting shut down! Most people, including myself, don't really pay super close attention to highway closures a month in advance of the date posted. However, I had to take note of this because the detour route for the highway closures in and out of the city is the Lakeshore, where Sunnyside is located.
- I had to make a decision. Advertise that the Gardiner Expressway shut down on the night of our event, OR, simply, encourage people to arrive early. I have a feeling that if I chose option #1 it would have had a very negative effect on ticket sales and my hopes for a successful Anniversary event. Our budget for this party was through the roof and all things considered, we had to find a way to save the party. We really did do our best to make this night work despite the ty hand that we were dealt.
- If I advertised that TMB were playing from 12:30am - 3am, many people would plan to arrive around that time to catch the headliners only. However, with the highway closures (that most people find out about at the last minute) would have caused a hell of a lot of people who were planning to arrive at midnight or 12:30am, to arrive much later because of the severe delays, therefore resulting in people completely missing the event all together.
- We decided that the best way to approach the promtion of this event was to just encourage people to arrive early.
I would like to sincerely apologize to anyone whose plans for the night got screwed up because of the information that we put out there prior to this event. In the end, i think it still turned out to be a great, well attended party and I want to thank you all for coming.
We have another event coming up on Labour Day Long Weekend, Sunday, September 5th, with another DJ that appeals to a wide audience, Dennis Ferrer. We will be posting set times and running our promo normally without being vague or weird about anything. So far, other than the air show during the day, there isn't anything that is going to get in the way of our plans for that night. After all we went through at this last event, I sure as hell hope nothing else comes up! I can't go through this again!
Again, thanks to all that came out. I hope to see you all again.

Thanks for the update. In future notifications, please also include details about parking in the area. We had the most difficult time finding a parking spot because after reading all the different signage in the adjacent parking....it seemed that parking there past 12am is a no go....
re: sound, it was perfect....up until TMB |

oh please don't give that...first of all, 1000 people? as much as it was busy on Saturday, I have hard time believing that is the capacity of that place - the majority of people were directly in front of the Dj booth, all the way down to the fountain, while the sides has people chilling/sitting down.. second of all - like we already stated (and I'm glad I'm not alone with that) - we came there for TMB only... openers were a nice treat, for the most part, but that's about it (IMO)

what happened with giving everyone a proper heads up about the switch of the time? I believe that wasn't posted anywhere nor I remember receiving any FB updates about the later start.. did you just change the time on FB event and let the rest of us figure that one out?

I believe that the way you explain things now wasn't how it looked to everyone on Saturday - it was clearly advertised that we should be arriving early and NOT because of Gariner closures but because the Dj's are playing early! why wasn't this communicated to everyone on FB and on TA?

that's nice of you, hopefully next time you release all the information to the party-goers in advance, road closures or not!
otherwise I'll let others add anything I might have missed in my reply..

there was well over 1000 people at Sunnyside for this event... 1400+ for the entire night, ins and outs. 800 tickets were sold in advance + guest list.
I will admit, i could have done things differently for this event and I should have. Absolutely a lesson learned. It's tough reading the negative reviews... we really worked hard on this event.
Sorry again... |
