I don't understand how people get so wired off coffee. I'll have an extra large coffee before I go to bed and I'm out within minutes. I've never found coffee to be a real wake me up.

I second the smoothie idea. I got an amazing juicer (Breville JEXL800, feels like I'm launching the shuttle everytime I use it), but we get more use from the blender. A pint of assorted berries, maybe a banana, whatever other fruit I have lying around, add ice or milk = amazing. My gf goes a step further and adds the maca stuff mentioned, and other expensive magic healing potions.

Although juicing carrots and whole apples is tasty, I should probably do it more often.

I was a caffiene addict, and I've never even tried coffee lol, but i quit drinking soft drinks 2 weeks ago and haven't felt better.

I averaged 4-6 cans of coke a day, sometimes more. I figured with the amount of sugar and caffiene i was taking in every day, I'd end up with diabetes or a heart attack, so i quit cold turkey. For the first 3-5 days I was getting headaches, so I popped tylenols to get over it, and started running every day to "wake me up"

I feel great now :D

The best part about it is, you don't wake up feeling like a mindless drone until you get your caffiene fix in the morning, you can wake up and actually do stuff.

Thanx to this thread i just drank 3 cups of coffee and smoked a pack of Belmonts!!!!!

Quit cold turkey from over 5 coffees a day for about 2 years. Severe head aches for the first week, then nothing. Easy habit to kick for me - I simply reached a point where I felt drained all the time from the over-stimulation, and knew it had to go.

Some people metabolize caffeine more rapidly than others. Furthermore, some people are so drained, with regards to adrenal stress, that they simply don't have much extra juice to put out there. Remember, caffeine isn't energy in itself; it simply prompts an outflow of what you already have ;)

If I have a coffee after 3pm I'll have a bitch of a time falling asleep that night.

Skipper: If you're that dependent on caffeine I'd recommend weaning yourself off of it rather than quitting cold turkey. I went from a large coffee, to a medium, to a green tea in the span of about a week and didn't miss it (until exam time).

I love green tea. Definitely wakes me up without the ty anxiety/crash/gut rot that I get from most coffees.

I've had to do this a few times. In fact, I'm just rounding on the corner on my latest detox. Here's my advice:
  • A cup a day on weekdays is at least a dependency, if not a literal addiction. Try going a week without it and see how productive you are.

  • If you're having more than a cup a day, start by cutting out 1 cup at a time until you're down to 1 regular-sized cup a day. If you go from 5 cups a day to 0, you'll be a nervous wreck. (Unless you're made of stone, but if you have that much willpower, you don't need a bunch of tips.)

  • Once you're down to a cup, go cold turkey. Don't bother with gradual reductions at this point; there's too much variability in the strength of coffee for this method to be reliable.

  • Eat breakfast and frequent snacks. A full stomach will help stave off the headaches.

  • Exercise. Like coffee, that will raise your metabolism and help you feel less bleary. Weights are actually better than cardio here because they fatigue you less, and it's best to go in the morning - but any exercise at any time of day is better than none at all.

  • Try substituting other hot drinks like herbal tea or decaf coffee. Part of the withdrawal is psychological and you can sometimes fool yourself this way. But don't switch to caffeinated tea; that's just substituting one form of caffeine for another and won't do squat in the long term.

  • Keep painkillers on hand at all times, because you will get headaches anyway, and there's nothing worse than trying to work while you're tired and in pain. The rapid-release Tylenols work great.

The first week is always the hardest. If you can make it longer than that with zero caffeine, you're home free.

I also found that I crave coffee less if I take a multivitamin in the morning. Placebo? Maybe, but whatever works.

I caved and had a diet coke on Saturday, but that's been it for 6 days now. I miss the taste of it though...

then decaf is the way to go for you :)
Capo di tutti
2-3 double long espresso's a day

9am - 11am - 3pm

If you go cold turkey you will pay the consequences...major fatigue, irritability etc

the upside is if you go off for a bit and decide to get back on the wagon, it hits hard just like the first time... mmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmm
