| The settler in that BBC interview is in complete denial. It just goes to show the power of warped rationalisations. By his own logic, invariably, it would be justified for everyone in the world to now forcibly become refugees, as I am sure that tens of thousands of years ago, someone else's ancestors were living on the land that each of our current homes occupy (even preceeding biblical times, when the Jewish ancestors had not even settled in Israel). Of course, in more recent times, the native Americans would also be justified in reclaiming the whole of North America. The pertinent point is that all of humanity lived by a different standard until the 20th century, and invading someone else's land was not universally accepted as being an illegal act, and so our forefathers cannot be criminalised (of course, their morality certainly should be questioned); however, morality was better reflected in 20th century laws, and since it was during this period that the illegal occupation of Palestinian land occurred, this modern-day Israeli invasion is a criminal act, and reasonable steps can be taken to right this wrong, in contrast to all the other immoral invasions since the dawn of humanity. |

| at least most native americans don't get to pay taxes and have free university schooling. I don't think the palestinians get any sort of benefits. |

Ugh, as much as I loathe the idea of bumping this thread, I just had to recommend a book I just finished reading on the subject. I picked it up to gain more insight into the conflict, and boy did I EVER. (actually I picked it up after reading this thread and craving more info).
Wow, absolutely INCREDIBLE read:
Son of Hamas
by Mosab Hassan Yousef.
For those of you who prefer to read about the world, than to sift through some cheesey romance novel, I would highly recommend this. not a tough read by any means. Its totally if f*cking with my head on all of the ideas I had about the conflict. What to believe now? :conf: |

No problem! :)
Just to give you an idea: when I first started reading, I thought the author was just starting a bitch-fest about the "opponent." But after digging deeper, I saw the changes he went through based on the things he saw and participated in. Its just incredible: he filled in so many blanks and answered so many questions, yet left me with so many *more* questions. The book really f*cked with my thoughts and ideas......... and I loved it ;) I swear I read the last 100 pages in about 2.5 seconds! |

It's always heartwarming to see infidels (I kid lol) becoming more familiar with the Nakba and its repercussions. Seriously.. respect! :)
I'll take your word Yousef's book. I'll check it out the next time I swing by the bookstore. You might be interested in this book: 'Victory for Us Is to See you Suffer' By Philip Winslow. Here's a neat little overview of it from a Globe and Mail article:
| quote: | Phillip Winslow wrote Victory for Us Is to See you Suffer: In the West Bank with the Palestinians and the Israelis after 2½ years of doing humanitarian work on the West Bank with the United Nations. Every day Mr. Winslow witnessed the fear, humiliation and violence routinely faced by Palestinians as they negotiate the endless series of Israeli walls, checkpoints and military operations that deface the West Bank, which Israel illegally occupies.
Of course if you’re afraid of real information, you could simply smear Mr. Winslow as just another anti-Semite, since that’s how critics of Israeli governments are normally treated. But it’s obvious he fully understands Israel's legitimate security needs and anxieties. Yet he also sees what anyone who has ever been around the West Bank quickly grasps. The way Israeli soldiers casually humiliate and torment Palestinians goes way beyond any legitimate security needs. Both Israelis and Palestinians recognize this reality.
The result is inevitable: the emergence of a group of young Palestinians for whom, as one of them tells Mr. Winslow, the only small victory left for them is if Israelis suffer too. Much is explained in that one pungent sentence. Every day, Israel wittingly creates more bitter, despairing, hopeless Palestinians with nothing to lose, and so the existing vicious cycle is perpetuated. Does our government understand this? |

Edit.. Don't let others discourage you from discussing this topic. I remember Abercrombie unjustly accusing me of starting this thread and talking about my sister's hymen.. so grimey. So glad he's gone! |
