So you didn't start this thread with an alt?

And if it wasn't you, why did he think it was??

There isn't a week when Israel is to blame for something. I am surprised Iran didn't blame Israel for Japan nuclear reactor problems lol

It's always heartwarming to see infidels (I kid lol) becoming more familiar with the Nakba and its repercussions. Seriously.. respect! :)

I'll take your word Yousef's book. I'll check it out the next time I swing by the bookstore. You might be interested in this book: 'Victory for Us Is to See you Suffer' By Philip Winslow. Here's a neat little overview of it from a Globe and Mail article:

Edit.. Don't let others discourage you from discussing this topic. I remember Abercrombie unjustly accusing me of starting this thread and talking about my sister's hymen.. so grimey. So glad he's gone!

Thanks :) I will have a look because I *crave* more info....the last book left me:  I couldnt sleep last night LOLOLOL...lame, I know.

Um, well, I choose not to participate in discussions I dont have a lot of "facts" on (hence me getting some books). Before this, my obsession was Africa and its conflicts, so, while I am pretty well read in that area (and even Cambodia and North Korea) I dont have much depth in Isreal/Palestine besides the basics and the riot-inducing rants from every angle.

I feel the media is not a very good source of solid material, and unfortunately, the news has been my main source for this conflict. I dont trust everything I hear and like to listen to peoples discussions and see various point of views before piping in ;)

A thirst for knowledge is never a bad thing....I wish people would have that craving more....including myself

im pretty sure this would be considered World War #0.9 because this conflict has been going on since way before WWI.

No. Maybe it's because I'm always vocal about our rights and so was the op. The thing is I wouldn't create another account to say what's on my mind. This is something that I'm passionate about; something I've grown up with with my entire life.

You have to ask him if you want his perspective.

Gotcha :) That's a respectable approach on your behalf. IMO, there's nothing worse than having someone debate a topic they don't know much about. Especially when it's about this conflict.. naturally, it really gets on my nerves.

Obviously, the media's very skewed towards one side of the conflict here in NA. BBC and Al Jazeera are my preferred news outlets when it comes to Middle Eastern politics. I find that they both give a more balanced review of events there than outlets such as CNN. They still do have their biases though.

So.. I really need to read up more about African history. Honestly, it's a weak point for me and I do need to strengthen my understanding of it. I've only read about countries like Nigeria, South Africa, ad Egypt before. My knowledge of other areas is very limited. Any noteworthy recommendations?

If you end up reading Winslow's book, do let me know what you think of it. I'll give you my two cents once I get to reading that book.

what bothers me about any debate is when someone only knows one side of the issue they are debating...you can't make an informed decision unless you look at it from all sides

Thats why this book made me nuts in the head. The guy's life progressed through so many phases of thought, based on the things he witnessed at the most secretive levels.

He went from one extreme to the next, back to the middle and around again. Even as a major Hamas "leader," he learned to investigate and see everyone's side of things (including his worst enemies). My mind was racing as he was struggling to understand why he started to feel compassion for the very enemy he orignially wanted to wipe off the face of the planet. It originally didnt make sense to me, and some of it I still have questions about. I dont agree with all of his actions, but I admire his bravery and compassion to REALLY understand the people on all sides, and what truly needed to be done in order to achieve some sort of peace to live a normal life again. TOTALLY not what you see on TV or BBC (btw I also like BBC the best imo....I find AL-jazeera to be as one-sided as Fox at times). :nervous:

Thanks :) There are too many people out there who argue off off pure emotion, and emotion never solved anything in this world (in fact I think it has made it far worse). Too many people have lost the sense to be rational and look at all facts from all sides before making an uneducated rant that just makes zero sense whatsoever (did you see the guy ranting in the Cor about the oil spill.....FFS, if I could prove my point any more clearly!) I may not be the most "wordy" person in an argument, however, when I do contribute, I tend to make sure I know what I am talking about before I jump in.....

I do not like to see people suffer and I am emotional in that sense, but I still like to know whats REALLY going on. I think the news always has their own agenda, which is why I prefer reading books based on people's real-life experiences. Especially the average-joe who has very little to benefit by convincing me of their "side of things."

I will try to gather some books I think were important on Africa. I usually give them off to others to read, so let me get a clear thought process on the tons of titles and authors going through my head and get back to you. I will go home and look through my stacks. My main focus was Sudan/Darfur, Rwanda, Uganda if you are interested in those areas.....
