Steve Jobs gifts iPods to Chile’s rescued miners — report

Apple CEO Steve Jobs intends giving each of the Chilean miners rescued from deep beneath the Earth an iPod, a French report claims.

Jobs joins a list of benefactors impressed at the stoicism and courage of the 33 miners who survived 68 days of being literally buried alive. Luiz Urzua, the miner’s leader, himself emerged from the mine last overnight. It is understood the team plan to jointly release a book. They hope not to have to mine again, or so previous reports have claimed.

Le Figaro describes the iPods as “personal gifts from Steve Jobs.” No word on what make or model, but we’d anticipate a top-of-the-range iPod touch, (NB: the miners will likely also need a Mac to sync their devices). The miners have also been offered one week trips to Greece by a Greek mining firm and a trip to South Korea by Chile’s football league.

(IP4 + Mac Probook would be much better)

If that is true, that is the lamest thing I have every heard. Like those guys need ing iPods. Maybe an iPad would be better but still. These people wanted their families not a ing lame gadget.

It would've been better to give them the iPod's while they were still down there. Maybe with family video's and songs picked for them...

But to give them gifts afterwards???

Stupid gimmick to attach your product to a human interest story...

Steve Jobs is shameless tho.

I was so into this story until this media twist at the end. What a sour ending to this heartwarming story. For shame!

is it true that all of them agreed not to discuss what happened in the first 17 days? sketchy!

Apparently they were trapped for 2 weeks before anyone even noticed.

The advice from experts was that they should not be given personal media devices because they are isolating and maintaining their comradory was high priority.

I wonder what the miners smelled like when they got out of there after 2 months. I guess that's why they were wearing brand new sealed jumper suits once they came out.

Hundreds of people die every year in mine accidents, it's just part of the job, everybody knows that.
While I'm glad these people got out alive, media coverage it's got, is just too much.

Way to miss the point. In a world so bombarded with cynicism/pessimism/negativity, a story like this is just what people need to remind them of what man is capable of. I think many would agree that there isn't enough media coverage of stories like this.

I don't think this is a shameless thing as much as I think it's just dumb...

Nobody's getting hurt from it...

It would've been genius if he'd have done it like I said. When they were still down there...

Nobody is faulting Oakley for giving them sunglasses because they were able to use them during the ordeal...

I can see that but I still don't think it would've hurt any...
