good for you that you like police state mentality

So...municipal bylaws that favour a multi-billion dollar real-estate behemoth over the bar and nightclub industry amounts to a police state?

China used to have a national dress code under Mao.
Saudi Arabia and Iran still do for the most part.
And im pretty sure their restrictive laws are GREAT for underground parties (until they catch you and hang you for crimes against the state!) |
For immediate release - Changes to local zoning bylaws have led to rapid spread of Communist ideology throughout the newly founded Islamic Republic of Toronto. Under penalty of law, anyone found playing non-government sanctioned repetitive fat beats on their back patio will have four fingers cut from their right hand. Singing Garage House lyrics from rooftops is punishable by beheading. The Shah has spoken.
You're both tilting at windmills, here. If you really want to make a difference, then use whatever clout you seem to believe you have, gather a coalition of forward-thinking venue owners, employees and performers and find the means to actually work with local government. Why bother fighting a losing battle against residential real-estate interests when you could be using that energy to explore other mutually viable options? Berghain received € 1.5 million in municipal support funding in 2009. You should be asking yourself how a club notorious worldwide for sex-n-drugs-n-techno managed to pull off that little feat. I'll bet you that it didn't start with a perpetually fed-up suburbanite appealing to nightlife loving 9-5ers who can make a 50+ page thread discussing the finer nuances of Jersey Shore on their favourite local message board.
Just sayin'.

| I hope it went well tonight. The drip, drip effect of bringing these changes in gradually seems to numb people into believing that these individual by-laws are not an issue; however, over a period of time the effects can be quite significant. |

Dear PivotTechno
I've been throwing a weekly 50-100 person party for the past 3 years (see http://archi-textures.info ) and find it fascinating that you think your monthly will not be touched by these new bylaws. I will send you a message that the manager of Nocturne sent me recently about the Ward 20 vote that I hope you take heed of because it most definitely effects your scene.
"[Adam Vaughan] spearheaded the creation of the Entertainment License and also the new harmonized bylaws which just passed in the last Council meeting. For example, the new bylaws require nightclubs to have one room only, prohibit second floor nightclubs (must be ground floor only), ban rooftop patios, and require 300m distance from any residential unit. Our venue is properly licensed, but I raise these points to demonstrate how restrictive the new bylaws are."
I think it's worth noting that we have been pushed from a mandated 3:30am closing time, to a 2:30am mandated closing time. It might be that your venue feels they're off the grid and therefore they don't count, but that will only last until they get shut down. There's a handful of venues that have a good relationship with their local police or councillor.. but that often doesn't count.
By the way, let me know if you have a demo, cause i'm always lookin to hear some new d.j.s at my night ;) |
