Good points, but Jay doesn't think of any of that as he's driving in from his nice, safe home in the 'burbs...

Most of the people who support the "entertainment district" paradigm are people who go there to party on weekends such as myself but I really don't give a sh!t about the actual neighbourhood or people who live there. I go party and leave when it's done.
But it's the businesses/residents in the area who have to put up with all the crap that get's left behind. Adam Vaughan as the rep for those people who actually live there should definitely be trying to reign it all in. |
And this is part of why Adam Vaughn wins - tens of thousands of drunk, trashy 905'ers descend upon the "entertainment district" every weekend and trash the place...because they don't a give a .
Locals on the other hand, do give a about their neighbourhood. The problem with Vaughn though, is that instead of dealing with the issues of just that one area (which is where all the problems are), he then escalates it to a city-wide "war on nightlife". |

Well it's kind of a waste to just waste resources/time on one ward, that would just be shifting the problem around, what he's doing is making sure no one area has to bear the brunt of all the clubs and their problems.
As a partyer I obviously don't like it, but as a rational person, it's hard to fault the logic and good work he's done to ensure not only his ward gets cleaned up, but the problem won't just be shifted away to another ward. |

Adam Vaughan actually cited the post-G20 weekend as a reason for banning rooftop patios.. Saying that more officers were injured by things being thrown from rooftop patios that weekend than on the actual G20 weekend.
My heart bleeds for them and their hundreds of dropped charges.
So yeah, I'm all for keeping the richmond crowd under control, but if it results in perfectly respectful crowds getting marginalized repeatedly, I feel personally attacked. |

The problem with the club district as is is that there is simply too high a density of nightclubs (something like 100 within a few blocks).
Banning patios and limiting the size of clubs, and even what floors they can be on does nothing to solve the actual problems.
What actually needs to be done...is nothing, really. Over time, simple economics will "force" out most of the clubs (its a central downtown area, land values are already high and will only increase with the new development - and clubs, which thrive on low land values, will sell their property, and new clubs will be unlikely to open in the area).
And its unlikely that new clubs that would open elsewhere would be concentrated to the same extent as in the existing club district, as that original concentration was a decision of the city. Therefore, there would be just as many clubs in the city, but more evenly dispersed throughout. |

CMR you don't understand..
the new harmonized law effects ALL of toronto. Almost ALL of toronto is zoned CR (commercial residential)
Vaughan's harmonized law, which is already passed, basically makes ALL clubs illegal.
2nd floor clubs.. illegal.
basement clubs.. illegal
clubs with more than 1 room.. illegal
clubs must be outside of 300m away from any residents..
All clubs in toronto are currently illegal, which means that if they get even a single complaint the cops can shut them down overnight.
This past on Aug 27th
Every promoter in toronto should be worried.. You will not be able to guarantee any venues for your d.j.s, headliners.. |

Yes, I know. My post was about what SHOULD be done (specifically in regards to the problems that come along with the club district), not what HAS been done. |
