i havent read any of the replies to this post but i just have to say that PvD is definitely NOT overrated and you obviously dont know much about him, seeing as you misspelled his name.. so just listen to more of his livesets and stuff before you post something like this.

hehe i wanted to use that too. the misspelling of the name...lol. but i didn't wanna sound anal about it. :) pvd is definitely in up there in the top 10. |

I went to see Pvd in Malaysia last month and I have to say he tore the roof off.
I don't get you people. I always thought a progressive set is a set that builds up through each track and then bam! an anthem and then starts all over again!
Well that's how PvD's set was that nite. It nearly brought me to tears when he played Another Way.
I myself have been djing for the last 8 years and I have to say PvD's mixing was exceptional comparing to some other big name djs ie judge Jules.
So I don't PvD is overrated cos he's one of the best out there! |

| No. A trance or uplifting trance set will usually build to anthems. Progressive is house with more trance elements. A prog set builds more that the songs actually do. I.e. the set has a climax, while each song may not be straight trance. That's my interpretation, certainly there are variations. peace. |

PVD's not top ten. He's top five.
If you're talking trance, you're talking about him and Sasha, who basically trailblazed the scene.. you listen to Tiesto's early stuff, it's a very similar style. You can say there are artists like AvB, VDM, who are better, but that's always debatable, and they haven't been around as long as he has. As a producer, he makes different varieties of trance (im not going to put it in a category) that cant really compared. Although songs like "We Are Alive" DO blow, you can't dispute Tell Me Why, For An Angel, and Words.. to name just a few.
Also the original post-er of this thread made an ignorant mistake judging him before listening to him (and yes, finding out his proper spelling). PVD's sets are amazing, to say the least.
Listen to his Essential Mix from Home in Lester Square (London) 4-23-00
and then tell me he isn't one of the greatest
the only trance djs in the same CLASS as PVD right now are sasha, tiesto, ferry corsten.. maybe you can throw in armin / oaky, but im not sure

in response to the last post, maybe we should start a new thread...but you guys are REALLY starting to confuse me as to the meaning of progressive.. i thought i had a handle on it. esp when record shops classify stuff as under certain genres, its a ing pain
one of you guys says progressive builds to a climax
another says its all that "boring" stuff (i think he means dave seaman)
others say its anthems and commercial stuff (um, ok?)
i'll put down what i think is..
good examples of prog house/trance:
schiller - ruhe (humate mix)
futureshock - the question
blaze - my beat (ambassador mix)
TDR - Squelch
but then some ****** goes and says tiesto's flight 643 is prog, what's that all about? i think its NOT.
for example.. could you say james holden - horizons is progressive? how about pete lazonby's sacred cycles? MAURICE - FELINE is called prog house... ? ubik - the dance? (that last one is a joke)
a lot of different people are gonna have a lot of different opinions on this one.. e.g. lucien foort's gemini (saints & sinners remix).. is a borderline case? and muzikizum part2?

progessive? it's just what the name implies...the song progresses forward till the end with a similar sound running through it. it's not too uplifting (but there are progressive/uplifting tunes). but it's quite difficult to describe.
energy 52 - cafe del mar to me is progressive.
it takes your from point A to point B very smoothly without you really noticing that it's doing this. next thing you konw the song is over and you're saying "awww...". hehe. :D

yeah, now that i think about it patt, i agree. i guess i'll stick with my point A to B explanation. :D and the tracks you mentioned are indeed progressive in my opinion.

perhaps prog was a termed coined by those huge record labels to appeal (see: pimp lots of vinyl) to those who dont like "normal" trance, and fancy themselves as music lovers of the Underground variety. note the tongue-in-cheek
occasionally i find myself questioning digweed's greatness, other times not. even the great darren emerson ;)
