Mac: Buyer's remorse? (pg. 4)

| Honestly, WIndows will need 1 more good os before I even think about going back. Windows Millenium, Vista, their track record is brutal. Nothing against pcs and to be honest, if the mac stores get any gayer , I don't know if I can go in the store anymore. I think that will be their downfall. Employees are going to start giving reach arounds and although I can see it working in NY Montreal and SanFran, the rest of america will be going wtf. What was once just a vague innuendo of gay has turned into a full fledge gay porno romp. And not the kind you sit down and say , ok i'm opened minded , lets see what happens gay porn because I'm on too much Ecstacy and this guy next to me is just as straight and its all good fun and there is nothing gay about it at all. I'm talking about black ex cons, I suppose black was implied when I said ex con. Anyways 4 black dudes getting it on in a cupcake shop but not just any cupcake shop, it just so happens this cupcake shop is for other gay guys so every minute, another gay dude comes in and it just gets worse and worse. By the end, i mean not that I watched to the end, but there was so much gay going on that not even a Cher Concert can amass such a concentrated amount of gay pheromones. |

Even though you can replace a HDD with an SSD, it needs a little more than just dropping it in - you often need a new enclosure and sometimes have to get connectors to hijack other bus ports like the optical bay for instance, but it varies from machine to machine.

No and it really depends on the model. The laptops (all of them) only have one HD slot, but the imacs can have two, and the mac pro's can have 4 drives. It just doesn't make sense to have SSD as sample drives right now - they're simply not big enough for the current price to be a viable option for large sample libraries. Having said that though, with Logic the better way to work is to have the current project folder on the primary internal drive, and when you save, you select copy audiofiles to project folder. That means if you pull samples of a larger HDD and use them in the project, you're actually using them on the SSD if you have it set up it. Very efficient way of working if you configure it that way.

I don't think that's true a analysis - FW is still available as standard on most models (USB is on every model) and have been for over 6/7 years now. Even if they were to drop it in 2011 (which isn't confirmed or even rumored), I don't really see it as ing the customer base with "constant hardware changes".
I'm glad they're pushing the boundaries and in some ways I'm glad one company is doing it, as I hope it will mean standardization. One of the most annoying things as an engineer is having to cater to so many different standards for connections and formats, so if lightpeak were to change all that and offer faster bandwidth, then I'd be happy with that.
Often when it's left down to competition to fight it out, the consumer actually suffers and technology not move forward as much as it could have.
case in point: Betamax vs Vhs. Betamax was by far the superior standard on a technical basis but it was out-marketed so we ended up with a lower quality format.
Same with DVD-HD and BluRay - DVD-HD is the superior standard but again, through clever marketing (maybe even by just having a catchier name or giving payola to manufcaturers, the lesser quality format won.
USB will be around for a long while but I'm not too bothered if FW800 goes, especilly as LP offers better performance all round. |

I don't have time to read the entire thread right now, but don't feel too bad. I don't think it's terribly fair to compare buying a Mac now to buying a PPC Mac just before they switched to Intel. That's a whole different ballgame. You're missing out on some potential processing power, but that's comparing it to buying before a major architectural change. G5's can't run Windows natively, miss out on a lot of modern software, etc. That's way different than just missing out on some horsepower.

What's with this line about the sole reason most people don't have Macs is because they can't afford them? For the record, I could buy the most expensive thing Apple produces right now, with cash, though I don't see what that has to do with anything :rolleyes:
I would hardly call Apple devices superior. Quite a few of them are good, and quite good, but a lot of the time they can be overpriced (at least outside of the US) and there are plenty of other comparable devices. |

I'm glad to see mac users on this board who actually know what they're talking about. These days, I associate Mac users with people who don't know what they're talking about: Hype beasts! I remember when the vast majority of mac users knew what they were talking about.
