Purists... my favorite variety of critics. In a perfect world, we are all live musicians, crators of textures impossible to produce within confines of a computer.

1. How much time did you spend in total to get it to work, including research?
2. How stable is it?
3. How many bugs have you found crippling?
4. Other issues you see with going this route - eg apogee hardware doesn't work, etc.

Serious question, not trolling.

i tried it, heres my experience:

1. ALOT! Downloaded and burned out tons of DVD images and bootloaders and what not.
2. It crashed/burned my IDE HD and DVD-rom (aparantly OSX only works with SATA).
3. For every update the procedure had to be done again. ing hell.
4. No support for soundcards and software etc.

Macs arent that expensive, if they come back in black im gonna be happy.

1 - A few months of research went into finding out what was the best hardware configuration and software install. It really comes down to mobo and graphics card. There's a few different versions of OSX out there that have been modded to work better than the store bought apple discs. 2 years ago I initially did it without the modded install discs and that was a ing journey. Command code hacking and straight terminal code still make me uneasy. Now the community has grown alot and there's so much support and the process has gotten loads easier thanks to the modded install discs. (iatkos, netkas, EFIX, ideneb)

2 - Define stable lol. It never freezes or locks up or restarts or anything random. Restart and shut down from OSX doesn't work I have to hit the buttons on my case. I built this to run logic and it does just that flawlessly.

3 - I'll just tell you what doesnt work on my machine. Time machine, shutdown and restart and the apple software update get ignored. I don't neeed the latest version of itunes or safari or time machine, the auto update tells me I need alot of stuff. But again, this box is for logic and making sweet sweet techno.

4 - I don't see any issues all other electronics see my computer as a store bought mackintosh running 10.5.8. No issues when plugging in anything usb. The other guy that has one that posts here has alot of hardware and I don't believe he has had any issues either.

I've said to everyone looking to buy a mac, build a hackintosh but honestly you have to be pretty computer savy or at least very motivated in the beginning to get it to work. No sound drivers, garbled display drivers for one but just like a windows install there's drivers out there you just have to find the ones that work with your machine hardware config. Even if someone is building a PC I would suggest that they build their PC with parts that are also working on OSX so they could experiment with getting the install to work and learn the basic OSX framework. With what I've learned I think I could get a machine up and running in a day now with a clean working OSX install

The killer is that you basically have to start all over again when apple bring out even a mid level upgrade (like Leopard to Snow Leopard).

It means Steve jobs can you anytime he wants - that to me completely defeats the "freedom" aspect of the OSx86 project. When it happens (and it has several times) everyone is scrambling for weeks if not months to get a solution.

Also, the fact you can't access updates is big no for me. You can't update logic. You'll also never get 64 bit mode to work, or logic nodes, or the bug fixes. Also, even on my mac, I have had to get updates to make simple stuff work like my printer as the manufacturer didn't supply them and apple instead found a solution (again those updates are not available any other way).

I could go on but it just seems to completely defeat the respective points of owning either a PC or a mac - Pc's are great when you want to play with every little aspect and get really techy/geeky with the platform and macs are just so stable and, much as I hate to sue the cliche, just work.

A hackintosh is a mac without the inherent stability or easy "application like" usage of the plaform.

I've said it before but a hackintosh just feels like getting a really hot girlfriend then cutting your dick off.

I do respect the learning aspect though, which is a completly valid reason to do it - I've spent years of my life playing with things just for the sake of experimentinng, from flashing phone ROM's to "Testing" cable boxes and FTA satellite.

The older versions still work the same I don't see the need for 64 bit but I'm not a working music producer just yet :tongue2

I will install snow leopard and windows 7 after the first of the year probably. Experimenting is the best part I love the "ah ha!" part of learning something

Between 9.0 and 9.13 (current) there were in the region of 200 bug fixes, a few dozen compatibility issues fixed and half a dozen performance increases. Logic still works but there's a ton of little things that won't and you're not getting the most out of your system or logic.

I wound't do it - apparently snow leopard is even more of a bitch to get running on a hackintosh, and you may have to switch some of your current hardware to other models.

I agree with Rann. As fun as a Hackintosh project would be, if you really wanted to use OSX for something more than just stuffing around, then actually buying a Mac would probably be the wiser move.

Hence the reason I bought my mbp. Looks like the only viable theory could be that apple will introduce a quad core MBP with a larger drive and or dual drive. Which would be enough for me to be happy as a pig in vomit.

You're not going to see dual drives in a MBP, IMO - they may discard the optical drive in favor of an external burner like the Mac Book Air, but I reckon they're more interested in getting bigger batteries in there as the MBP has the lowest battery life of all their laptops and making it last 8 hours plus would be a big selling point to apple.
