You've been stuck on Oakenfold's Essential Mix tour for the past decade. Of course you don't have the slightest idea what those genres are.

Thats cause every time I hear them I get bored. I have never been able to find the draw to dubstep at all...
Its giant bass stabs with ambient music and sparse percussion with a lot of delay lines, and its too repetitive to be entertaining for long. |

The future of EDM should be reverting to 1991 and starting over... would be easy, no need for new music, just reprint the old stuff.
Besides the trainspotters no one will even ing know, because its a whole new generations of club goers and party people and those that have been around that long are too monged out to know whats what, they probably think they finally found that time machine they keep seeing in their acid induced haze. |

About the speed i think it will slow down a bit again, a lot of commercial house is at 125 bpm now, a lot of tech house is at this speed too, it's a matter of time that someone decides to make a track at 123 bpm or so. I have a dance 2 trance vinyl that is at 120 bpm and i find it extremely slow but is not that far from 125 bpm so i find probable seeing 120 bpms in records soon.
As for "future genres" i see Dubstep clearly, Trance (But not in the form of 1990's trance, even more watered down than todays trance, right now you see a lot of pop in the form of electro house, i am noticing that some big pop names are taking inspiration from Trance Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kilye Minongue sound a bit trancey now, trance is now a layout for vocals... and since half of the djmag top is trance and the SHM guys dig a proggy cheesy house i think there will be an influence.
In general i see that the whole EDM scene will go downhill, like every underground thing begins being art and ends being business , you will have some true EDM festivals but EDM will overcome pop/rock (in the form of guitars specially, synths and 4/4 are becoming dominant) and the cheese will drown us.
And oh well about tech i think laptops will kill cds but slowly, cds killed vinyl because of piracy and weight, this will be much slower but live sets will become more important, playing a good set with a few adds, i've seen some live sets of people playing their productions live and i value their effort but in the end is almost the same than pressing play and this kind of sets are usually the same everywhere and last for less time. |

My prediction is that nothing really spectacular will happen.
How ever I do think we will see DJing with tablets instead of notebooks soon. |

There have been plenty of new styles in electronic music... it's simply that nobody has bothered to give them new names. For example, "Deep house", "progressive house" and even "trance" bear almost no resemblance to the genres that had those names twenty years ago. Look at cutting edge minimalist drum 'n bass and compare it to the original jungle and there's enough difference for them to be considered seperate genres, if people bothered to market them as such.
And then consider that thinking in genres when looking for musical innovation is almost paradoxical in the first place. Tell me what genre the new Caribou or Flying Lotus or Actress albums belong to. All the most talked-about electronic music of 2010 I can only see filed vaguely under "electronic" in my local record store. |

i would file that schlep under "internet journalist music". better suited for pitchfork/urban outfitters/adult swim rather than a club. this thread is about EDM not EM. |

I saw both Caribou and Actress live at the Warehouse Project in Manchester a couple of months ago, and several thousand people were having little problem dancing to them.
Also: this criticism is coming from the guy who claims to play ing footwork? |

But he still has a good point. For the same reason I prefer less (sub)genres. You need a study to know which is which. Many tracks can be put in multiple (sub)genres. For searching similar tracks the (sub)genres are useful, but there are never enough of them. Good there are forums to ask for similar tracks. |
