The King's Speech (pg. 3)

TKS isn't a bad film, but my main criticism is that it's just such a cookie-cutter Oscar contender. The only thing that was missing from the usual formula was Judi Dench. This doesn't mean it's bad, it's just not unique.

I think the Oscars were a really good analogy for the year in movies. Awards were really spread out, and I think it's indicative of the lack of a dominant movie. There were no movies this year that were life changing, epic masterpieces, those that were nominated were just good films (for the most part). Will any of these films be remembered 10 or 20 years from now? Not likely. People raved about The English Patient the year that it won. I doubt you could find ten average people that could tell you what year it was made, let alone even the most rudimentary plot summary. I think TKS falls right into this same category.

The show overall, still sucked last night.

For awhile I wasn't sure who looked more like they'd had a stroke: Kirk Douglas or James Franco.

So much for the "younger demographic" experiment. Anne Hathaway looked pretty as always, but that was about it. Franco looked lost. NEVER put Mila Kunis on stage with Justin Timberlake again. Timberlake fires out that Banksy joke, and all you could hear was crickets. IF YOU CAN'T TELL JOKES - DON'T TRY!!!

Billy Crystal gets on the mic, and the entire crowd was like "Thank God"! The only entertaining bit of the night was Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law cutting up.

I guess if I want to be entertained by an awards show, I'll have to wait for the AVN's.

I found Franco/Hathaway combo pretty dull - I like her as an actress but I got tired of her during the 3 hours of the telecast
Franco looked stoned - man I missed Hugh Jackman last night!

RDJ + Jude Law = lovely! :)

I didn't mind watching the Oscars this year. I actually preferred having actors as hosts, it seemed more genuine. When comedians host, they always crack jokes about the actors, and some of the jokes come of as offensive, which seems unsuitable for an event that is supposed to honour actors on the highest level, not insult them. There weren't as many moments where you were cringing at the host's comments, which I preferred.

I think Anne Hathaway would have been better on her own. James Franco was oddly absent for most of the show anyway. WHERE WAS HE??? I agree that he just seemed stoned when he was present...lol.

I loved all of Anne's dresses, she looked gorgeous. Her little song dedicated to Hugh Jackman was really well done too :)

I was excited for Gwenyth Paltrow's song, but eek, she really struggled :( And ya, nobody got Justin Timberlake's joke about Banksy. I only got it, because of the thread that was started in this forum about him! lol

I dunno - her singing number was awkward! Did you see Jackman's face? That smile was so strained lol I bet he was like wtf?

her dresses were awesome but I didn't get the point of 7 dress changes?

I'd rather see someone like Helen host this :)

I think it took everyone including him a minute to figure what was going on! I def. don't think he was in the loop about the song. lol

I think the point of the 7 dresses was for interest! Everyone loves Oscar fashion, and it was a great way to showcase it even more so by having a female host, and taking advantage of that fact. I was looking forward to what dress she would have on next.

Helen? As in Helen Mirren???

This was the most boring Oscars ceremony to-date IMO

no no Degeneres! :)

I actually didn't notice that the dress changes were common practice - or forgot :)
and now I think of it - RDJ + Jude would make great hosts too :) some much eye candy, nom!

She said that she changed dresses because that was Shirley MacLaine's advice.

Ah, I see. I was just taking a guess. Did she say why Shirley MacLaine suggested she do it? Either way, I liked that she did that :)

+1

The King's Speech is such an obvious Oscar choice. Traditional storytelling with great acting. I can't see it being remembered for long, and I too compared it to The English Patient. I thought Black Swan, 127 Hours, and Inception were all superior to The King's Speech. Those three films all did something new. I also preferred The Social Network to The King's Speech, but I can certainly understand arguments the other way.

I do think Colin Firth had a strong performance, but I think Rush was the star of that film. In terms of best actor, I think it should have gone to Franco for 127 hours: he was so convincing. Portman definitely deserved best actress.

exactly how i felt, i rarely see such a realistic portrayal of a character in a movie.
