Moving to the US.... (pg. 3)

I moved to LA from Atlanta, where I was born and raised, less than a year ago. Being from the South, I can say:

1. 34k should be fine. That was enough money to live comfortably on in the Atlanta suburbs, so it should definitely be ok in NC.

2. The humidity can be bad, but on the coast of NC it won't be nearly as bad as the deep south. People from the west have literally no tolerance what-so-ever for humidity (or cold), so they're always going to make it sound horrible. I know UK summers can be hot and humid, so you will be fine, especially since everywhere you go will have AC.

3. Sweet tea is awesome.

It's a Dodge in the picture, I believe. But you can get whatever you like, as long as it's big. Preferably something that runs on diesel.

That's how we do it out here in real America.

;)

Is it true that people eat smarts in the South like candies?

Ah, ok, good to know.

It's sad that the only people who truly appreciate the weather here are people who moved from somewhere else. LA natives act like it's Armageddon if the temperature drops below 45 or it rains for two days in a row. I hope I don't turn into that in a few years. :(

Just a question, how much is ~ $34k a year to live off in the states? I checked on city-data.com (or something like that) that says living costs in Beaufort NC is 16% below the US average.

$34k for the two of you or each? I'm not a million miles from you and my wife and I certainly couldn't survive on that...as a British expat myself don't forget to factor in the cost of trips home. That'll eat a good chunk into that income.

Also depends on the cost of renting/owning where you are. For me the cheapest place to rent outside of the areas was around $900/mo, but the place I was in just before I bought was $1300/mo. I suspect in Beaufort renting wouldn't be expensive....

I hope you have your SCUBA license...Morehead City has some great diving!

Do it. You won't regret it / you will regret it if you don't.

Yeah I really would like to, it just depends on funding at the end of the day. We (the university) have applied for a grant that would really comfortably fund me, but if that falls through it will be a lot trickier money wise as we would have to seek funding from many small grants as opposed to one large one.

Good news is that the Prof. i'm working with at the moment is putting forward plans to work on a Ph.D. with him. It would be in the UK but he is the best supervisor anyone could wish for as he is very very smart but also completely down to earth and likes to have a laugh. So either way looks like i'll be doing my doctorate :)

Doubly good news is that for the two modules I did this semester I was top of my class, so i'm well on track for a 1st class Honours degree :happy2:

But yeah, I think that if the option came up to work in the US, I would probably take it.

What side of NOAA are you looking to get into? (considering I am under part of their umbrella)

North Carolina is within driving distance of Miami and NYC - you're smack in middle of East Coast. Some parts of Carolinas are very nice - Outer Banks, for example.

And then there are rural towns that are known for supplying guests to Jerry Springer, Maurie, and 10000 other "my brother done knock me up" shows.

Also, it's the area that tends to get hit by hurricanes later in the summer. Either way - exciting .

34K will be enough to live nicely down south. You ain't gonna be "largin it" but you won't starve either.

Not your hot bed of EDM but if you're outdoorsy - you got shore on one side and Skyline Drive on the other. Plenty to do in your spare time, if you're up for exploring.

Southerners tend to be little more laid-back, less s than your typical northerner, and a good prospect of your conversation partner packing heat makes people little more polite, you know... just in case.

Just try to avoid parties that start off with white sheets, crosses freshly soaked in gasoline, and ropes neatly tied into nooses.

Thanks for the info so far.

It would be on the coast - Beaufort, NC. The gf is fine with it, shes completing her masters at the moment but has already been looking at properties etc over there as soon as I told her.

Haven't told my family yet, but will have to soon. They've always known that with my career aims I would want to move out of the UK at some point.

Hoollly ! you're right on the banks! OMG, awesome! I'd love to live on the shore. Best location ever, so tranquil. Envious!

Do it, you'll love it.
