To see family. In the last year I've been back for two weddings, a summer trip, a Xmas trip, and am going in a couple of weeks as I'm becoming an uncle for the first time imminently.

Some people here seem to forget that the 34K is for working on a phd not an all out regular salary and should not be considered as such.

Now I don't know if it's good rate in this context and that field, but given the fact it seems ok for the area I would say go and do it if you feel it's the best thing for you.

It isn't easy being away from family and friends but the experience you will get out of going abroad for school and all the extra bits should make it worthwhile in the long run, even if it's extremely hard on you at first being away from everyone you know and love

Get a hosie cow when you move in within the first week (especially if it will be during the Spring/Summer months).

$34k s very good for a Ph.D. in my field, most students over here would only get $22k

North Carolina is within driving distance of Miami and NYC - you're smack in middle of East Coast. Some parts of Carolinas are very nice - Outer Banks, for example.

Southerners tend to be little more laid-back, less s than your typical northerner, and a good prospect of your conversation partner packing heat makes people little more polite, you know... just in case.

You can drive to NY and Miami from North Carolina but I would recommend flying.... that's a lotta in time in the car.

Hey it's not just the coast that's beautiful in NC... Charlotte is a fantastic city with incredible professional opportunities, and the mountains in the Western part of the state offer a lot of cool stuff to do. You can go to any state and find rural po-dunk towns with toothless meth heads!

Ask Comrade Stalin... he's been here to Charlotte twice in the past 3 weeks and I practically had to hog-tie him to get him on the plane back to Texas. :p

Is this about right for how the accent is in NC?

Yes.

I've lived in the south for twenty-five years but fortunately never developed a southern accent. Too suburbanized or something, I guess.

Nice ok, wasn't sure if it was someone imitating it or w/e.

Looking at houses to rent, most of them are around the $800p/m mark (not including utilities). That seems really cheap compared to over here, or am I missing a monthly tax i'd have to pay on top?
