i spotted tunecore but i need more feedback about it before starting there. I am also thinking of build my website and give almost everything for free, i have some unreleased tracks that no matter what labels say are better than the signed material.

I've got about $.05 waiting for me over at Tunecore. Signed up as more of a formality, wanted to release something myself. After the whole experience I would recommend not releasing anything independently, at least not starting off.

I got some money from tunecore, but i would not be surprised if i miss like 30% from my sales or so, REBEAT is a lot more accurate as far as i experience till now.

And i am fine releasing myself, i sell via Soundcloud, people can purchase directly from my profile and it works. Like everybody here it no real income, but it pays for the MacDonalds family dinner and odd Kebab.

Hmm I didn't know you could sell through soundcloud, i suppose that's not a feature offered with the free version.

Well this is really something that is personal to each artist, but for example when I was getting vinyl released I would only deal with labels that had major distribution, Amato and what have you. In the digital age, I pretty much won't deal with any label that doesn't have Beatport distribution. Period. I know there are other alternatives and such, but that's just my personal standard. If you are a label that I haven't worked with before and I see you are either not on Beatport or have like 2 releases on there, I'm not going to deal with you. I've just had too much good work drowned in the noise.

Mmmmmmmmm'k ta :)

Is it common for labels to offer professional mastering as part of the deal or do they expect everything to be hot as and commercial volume before even considering?
Raphie
Indeed, VERY important especially in EDM land NOT to have your track mastered by "the label" (often the "labelmanager" slapping Ozone preset "hard house" @ -4dbfs on your track.)

Really unless there are some big names with a label which you can leverage, your far better off releasing yourself. However be prepared to invest a few hundred $ in order to get publishing access with your own label to Beatport.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. Labels have the promotional muscle and established fan base. Releasing independently is like a tiny ripple in ocean.

There is simply so much noise out there that being on a label is necessary to rise above it, even if only a little bit. Typically, DJ's, who are your main customer, follow labels more than individual artists.

I dig by names and genre's. hardly finding a good track by label.

That's where you leverage Soundcloud, upload private tracks, ofcourse you need to take a paid soundcloud account to do some of the interesting stuff, but it works.

Besides most DJ's are just label front men, they dominate with releases from the labels they release on. They release compilations from their own label artists etc. etc. so it's not that they gonna give you a break anyway. Look at Ferry Corsten, nearly plays all Aleph releases, Above & Beyond, nearly only Anjuna, Tiesto, Blackhole. Armin - Armada etc etc...

so the 10% other label tracks that they add to their playlist is the "must have" track of that week or month, we don't make "must have" tracks, we make "me too" tracks. Your far better of with the 50< DJ Mag list, not tied to a label and with distinct taste, those guys are very approachable via Soundcloud.

I mean we're (as most TA members) are doing good, we make good accomplishments and we do some distinct. but we're not beatport top-10 material (yet)

i look for names too, i follow labels regularly but most of times i think "let's see what XXX has released lately" i follow like 50 artists and i complement it with some random searches through beatport and youtube.

About mastering. All the labels expect a quality product, think that mastering a track is 20€ for example, not all the tracks earn that much money so is a loss for the label . In conclussion if your track cost them 0 they're more likely to sign it. In any case if you master your own track and improve it slightly it will be more appealing wether it needs a professional mastering or not.

I looked at mypromopool the other day, but up untill now i could not be asked to populate all those fields yet. which are the better promopools to spend time in?
