Why are Americans so uptight?
View this Thread in Original format
Eugene
Some friends of mine recently came over from Europe to visit me and see the USA. (A man and his daughter.)

So today we went to the beach, and the man's swimwear was European-style -- not the boxer-shorts that every American male wears to the beach, but the "curved" and tight-fitting swimming shorts popular in Europe, Israel, ... everywhere, except the USA, where people are so damn uptight!

Well, when we were at the beach, all the Americans were staring at him, and it was so freakin' embarassing! WTF is wrong with them? Isn't America supposed to be "multicultural"? He wasn't naked, for God's sake! Can a native-born American tell me if swimwear like this even exists in the US? It seems all the normal people around the world wear it!!

I was really outraged by those narrow-minded and dumb stares that he got!

Yeah man, I dunno what it is Eugene, I sometimes feel like that about people here but it's not too bad in Can I don't think. Maybe it's because they don't think it's "manly" enough? I have no clue man. I hate people who are close minded period, whether they live in America, Canada or wherever. My brother is like that...drives me insane!! HELP! lol

eeek why would u wanna wear Y-fronts anyway. That goes for swimming gear and underwear for that matter.

1. Far too tight on the gonads
2. If u come off the water flume, theyve pretty much disappeared miles up ur ass
3. More prone to wedgies in general
4. There evil!!
5. Cant think of any more, but i no there are more reasons!

Ahh, so it's not just the US, it's Britain too!
Both of these!

yeah... there's the English-speaking countries, and then there's the rest of the (normal) world.

EDIT: No flaming intended at all! :)

To be honest I wouldn't say tight fitting swimwear for males is at all popular in "Europe" (how you can say anything is 'popular' in a continent with 50 different languages and ten times that number of varied cultures I have no idea!).

I agree thought that you wouldn't get laughed at in the UK for wearing it, so it is pretty narrow-minded to stare.

Europe is generally more radical and liberal than the US, I guess you could say that in a lot of European countries 'anything goes'. Admittedly I haven't been to the US, but there's no doubt in anyone's mind it is a more conservative country than the liberal ideas followed in Europe.

I still find it bizarre that people would stare. Anybody who takes swimming seriously wears tight fitting clothing because it's more suitable than baggy shorts.

Exactly, you're completely right, and yet these people really stared as if he was naked!

Something tells me there's a serious problem with many Americans, with how repressed they are and how uptight -- especially with respect to cultural issues.

But what really outraged me was this: Isn't the US supposed to be a "diverse" "multicultural" country, with freedom of lifestyle and expression, so that even in theory people shouldn't stare at you like you came from another planet?!

Apparently not! :whip:

oh yes I can...
I disagree with you on that one.

There's a group of ideas and cultural issues that change across the ocean, and although I agree that there may be minor differences within a continent, I still believe that there is a set of things popular throughout Europe that stand in complete contrast to the USA.
