Now that I reread this, you don't even make any sense. People are loyal even to top 40 clubs where their friends are and where they are having a good time. What international dj or big show top 40 clubs do hire? NONE. Still you see the same people over and over at the same club.

Go back to your drawing board and rethink your stuff, you're way off.

seems kind of harder for a city like montreal where most of the people are attracted to those top 40 type of clubs especially people from out of town.

What city doesn't have this problem, apart from maybe Berlin. At heart were all a bunch of music geeks that love following up, reading and discovering music, new or old. I think to people like us we put these DJ's on a higher level then what they actually are, so its strange when the regular joe doesn't know who so & so DJ is or what a good club is to us.

A buddy suggested the original text wouldn't be helpful... ;-)

There's nothing wrong with this city and there certainly isn't anything wrong with the Montreal crowd. If you compared this city to almost all the other cities out there, we'd definitely rank in the top percentile.

What I do see is a lack of creativity in Montreal as well as a fear of taking risks. If people don't show up to a party it's no ones fault except for the one's throwing it. It's as simple as that.

And lately we have been extremely spoiled with the amount of good djs coming to town, which also contributes to the fact that some quality events are a bit emptier than they should be.

I see your point but i don't know a lot of people who care about Chez Damier, and even Jimpster as a matter of fact, Music geeks included. These bookings, for a Friday night in afterhours are risky business...

Edit: PrinceSultan is right, you need to be more creative and stop relying only on the DJs you booked. Sona days are over. People want DJs but More importantly a good party.

Both Toronto and Montreal are having an issue filling clubs. What happens when your regulars semi-retire and the younger people aren't coming out to support? That's a big challenge for all those bookers and marketing guys out there.

the blog electro house scene is ing huge in Montreal, I Love Neon are probably one of the biggest promoters in the city.. it's kinda house, but there's no song structure.. and it's loud and noisy and everyone's completely hammered. Dubstep and mash up hip hop electro, all that is so huge. The Deadmau5 stuff.. if you can target these kids into liking real house.. there's your replacements.
WittyHandle
The scene would be better off dying than incorporating those kids. The only similarity between the two is that fact that there's a DJ playing prerecorded music. I'm not knocking them, I'm sure they enjoy what they are into, but the two have nothing to do with each other.

the thing is, they're ing kids. 17-19 years old fresh off their Metallica obsession.. listening to noisy dance music and getting super hammered. They'll grow up and out of it if you expose them to the techno/house scene in a few years.

I dunno, when you guys were 18 were you popping pills and partying until 10am? Give them some time they'll mature.
WittyHandle
I'm all for giving people time to mature. I'm not judging them forever. I have seen what bringing in some of that crowd has done to the afterhours scene in 2005 when electro kicked in, and it was awful. You said it yourself, some of those kids go to Stereo on Friday nights and the crowd sucks. Let them get exposed by friends dragging them in on a decent Saturday and acclimating them.

So... are you saying that popping pills and partying until 10am is something that mature people do? 0_0

Don't attack "ing kids" with your prejudices, you ing idiot.

Montreal rocks guys. It's even rocking a little too much.

Right now we are testing the very limits of what a small city like this one can handle.

2 after-hours clubs in the top 100 DJ mag, PIknic, Igloofest, Montreal en lumières, fantastic bookings, bal en blanc, black & blue.....

Never seen winter so alive in Montreal. Its usually dead. We had so much this year.

I was in New York last week-end for Ben Klock, and the vibe doesn't even compare to here.

I lived in London, Los Angeles, Sydney.... and althought they are great cities, Montreal is truely unique.

Promoters and artists from Toronto and NY writting to me saying that they want to move here, that we kick ass.

Most guests I bring are having a hard time just findind a second gig in North America.

People that haven't travelled much may think that other cities are SO much better. That everything is SO great and life would be SO much better.

The fact is most of them aren't.

Like a lot of Montreal djs/producers that can't wait to travel the world because Montreal doesn't "get it".

Believe me, if Montreal doesn't get it and you can't get a crowd moving here, most of the world won't neither.

Places like Germany are an exception, a really tiny %. Then again, Germany has it's own problems, like employment.

I think what people could do if they really enjoy a night, is to help it and pass the word around, try to bring people with you. Spread the joy.

But as promoters we do have to find better ways then Facebook to reach our audience. Honestly, It's very hard to figure that one out.

I am way too old and tired to go out and party every week-end trying to recrute new audiences. That's why we do need help from the younger people.
