Ya and a good way at allowing the guv to charge 30 dollars. What a joke. On a side note the pat down broads need to learn that a cigar isn't an illegal substance. |
just because a cigar is not illegal does not mean they have to allow it on premises. |

i also got pissed about this a few weeks ago. the reason i was given was "we can't tell what's inside it." that's really not hard. i know it won't change but still, it's annoying since nothing really happens to people who smoke joints inside or outside.
anyways, i thought the show was quite good. got some video from right in front of the singer... hopefully i'll upload it tomorrow (today). something no one has mentioned was the LED wall that gareth had behind him, which i thought was awesome. i also liked the slightly lowered dj booth, not sure i've seen it used that way yet! at least not recently.
i thought his song selection was decent and his mixing was good enough to get by but he really didn't do anything technically that caught my attention, which i would expect from someone considered one of the biggest acts on the circuit. overall though he kept the room quite happy and energetic, although i did bounce a bit early (around 4:30) so not sure about after that. seemed to be more energy in the main room than dash berlin or super8 & tab, which were both decent events imo. didn't look at the time once between 12:30 and 4 so i would say on the whole it was a good time.
as far as the rumoured closing of guv, let's be honest this has come up at least once a year for the past couple. it probably has some merit to it but i would think that as soon as it's finalized they will let the public know. imagine how much more money they'll be able to milk as the closing date inches closer and closer. as some have pointed out in the past the eventuality of the venue closing may be a factor in the shift to more mainstream bookings for all access events (which i don't think anyone on this board can deny has definitely been a recent trend), since there is a lot less need to maintain the underground reputation as there's no long-term future to consider(at least for guv, which will drive people to charles' other venues anyways). combine that line of thinking with the recent domination of edm over the mainstream and you have a guaranteed huge night every holiday by booking a bunch of cheesy acts and STARTING ticket prices at $30 or even $40. brings in the loot, and leaves people like me to only attend the special saturday bookings and miss the few acts i like who get booked into all access nights on account of the price and discomfort that comes from the overcrowdedness.
i'm sure there are some club angles to this that i don't see or know about but whatever, just my 2 cents |

I'd say the extended set is enough reason to make it $30 as the concert was.
Cigar thing I see your point but the real problem is that you didn't know that prior to going, and that would upset anyone in that position. When you look at the actual rule of no cigars it makes a decent amount of sense and guv isn't the only place that would've tossed that out. |

LED wall was great and the custom visuals on it were solid too. The booth actually lowers all the way to stage level and quite far up, I read somewhere that they were the first club to do that.
Looking forward to that video I hope it's got good audio. From where I was standing most of that portion was drowned out just by talking. |

I'd been looking forward to this event for a long time (it had been almost 2 years since I was last at the Guv), and I was pretty pleased. I got there at around 12:30 AM to catch the last hour of Manzone's set, and even though it wasn't my cup of tea, I could appreciate his work as the people around me seemed to be really enjoying themselves. The one song I was really happy to hear, Sharam - Fun, he cut short, so I was getting pretty anxious to see Gareth and his entrance didn't disappoint.
Nobody can knock the guy on the energy he brings to the room, and I felt the LED wall was a huge asset to his performance. On the whole, I thought the whole 'concert' bit was pretty overdone and underwhelming, due to the sound issues everyone had already mentioned. But one can't blame the vocalists when it was the sound crew's problem, and they still merited applause for coming all the way here to perform.
Track selection was pretty much what was expected. He played a whole bunch of songs from his album, to full effect, as well as the standard variety of trance he usually plays in his live sets and in his podcast, so I won't be complaining because that's exactly what I went to hear. For me, the track of the night was Tiesto vs. Lange & Andy Moor vs. Komytea - Lethal Stadium Four Killers.
My friends and I were pretty exhausted by 3:30 AM, right after he dropped Sanctuary (which also deserves an honourable mention for the whole spectacle of the vocalist, guitar player, and lyrics on the big screen). On a bitter note, a big ' you' goes out to the who veered into the shoulder on Queen's Quay to cover us in slush, but I wasn't going to let that ruin my night.
If anyone has a full tracklist, please don't hesitate to put it up! |

I think the more "mainstream" bookings have a lot to do with the economy and not so much with making as much money as possible before the club closes. The entertainment and bar industries have been some of the hardest hit over the last few years because people simply aren't spending as much. They want their dollar to go further and are expecting more value than ever. Bringing relatively well-known talent at a reasonable price to introduce people to the venue creates the next generation of "Saturday regulars" (of which, as someone in his early 20s, I consider myself a part of). If it weren't for hearing about ASOT450/Decadence on Armin's show last year, I wouldn't even know the Guv existed - and now I'm there a couple times a month.
Is it the Guv of yesterday that most TA users are used to? Absolutely not. But the times are changing for better or for worse, and at the end of the day it all boils down to what makes the club's books balance. At the rate the EDM scene is going these days, yesterday's underground is tomorrow's mainstream. Artists are rising to worldwide popularity virtually overnight (ie. Avicii, for one) and if our kickass venue wants to support that, I'm all for it. |

so if you know this then dont whine about it.
im glad they refuse cigars because they smell worse than cigarettes.
and why would you bring a cigar to a club? were you planning on standing outside in the cold for an hour to smoke it? |

I agree that it may not be fair but I dont know anyone personally who would bring one to a club. I would automatically assume they would take it or tell me to throw it away. |
