It all has to do with exponential growth.
Depletion of natural resources, population growth, and many other detrimental factors grow exponentially.
To visualize this model imagine a jar with a single penny. The number of pennies will grow by 2x every minute. Therefore when the clock hits 2 minutes there will be 2 pennies, 3 minutes- 4 pennies, 4 minutes- 8 pennies. Assume 2012 represents the 24 hour mark on the clock or one full day.
By this theory when the clock hits one minute before midnight (2012), the jar will still only be half full - decieving us into believing that everything is still okay (as we have half the jar to fill). Only in that final minute will the jar go from being half full to completely full and we will all be ed.
Basically, if the world is going to end in 2012, it doesn't mean we will notice any changes by 2011 or even by Nov. 2012, it will all happen within the final days. |

| so you're saying everything will be in control, and then in a single day every single woman on the planet will give birth and every livestock, tree, and other resources are going to just die and rot away? |

Consider oil for example. Finite resource. Our usage of the resource grows exponentially. That means there is a certain length of time where the usage doubles - in my previous example it is one minute. Lets just say for example the oil usage doubling time is 1 year. That means that by 2011 - we will still have one half of the total amount of oil there ever was. In that one year 2011- we will consume as much oil as we have used in our entire history. Most people will be comfortable knowing that we have only used half our total oil but don't understand that each passing year we use more than we ever have before. |

| doubling the oil usuage every year. lol. yeah i can see that happen. just suddenly everyone have two cars, takes a airplane trip twice a week, have doubled the temperature in your house (or cooled if you live in that place of the earth). its increasing but i doubt its accelerating much. things arent that bad considering how many people we are. we just need some bigger natural disasters to wipe out some people to get thing in balance again. or a plague preferable, less damage. burn those bodies as fuel for remote heating. |
