It's not their own messes at all. So many dictatorships have been propped up and supplied with arms and support over the years by countries completely external to the area. Hell, you know what, just look at this:

| On balance, I think this action is justified. A judgment has to be made, taking into account potential costs and benefits. The bastard used the fact that people's attention had been diverted to Japan, to launch an all-out offensive to regain the liberated towns and cities. Hundreds of civilians had probably been killed. He was on the verge of levelling Benghazi, which has a population of a million, with a vow to show no mercy. Preventing this kind of slaughter does not compare to the illegitimate invasion of Iraq. |

Wow, so much playground talking in here... yawn.
I've been trying to learn more about the context of the situation - can someone explain why it's been a month and now there's international intervention happening? What was the catalyst for that?
Agreed on the economic motivation behind this though - Libya is a very small portion of worldwide oil production but it's enough to reduce the buffer between demand and supply and make the markets worry about what other middle east supply could follow the same fate. |

It is my understanding that:
Some of it is strategic/planning/not jumping the gun and getting involved immediately. The UN didnt get involved at first bc Gheddafi originally agreed with the international community to not attack with force, however he completely bullted them and did it anyways (in a very intense fashion). Thus, measures were then taken after Gheddafi went back on his word.
If any of this is wrong, feel free to correct me, but this is what I am gathering from everything I have read. |
